Hello Friends,

This will be the first time I’ve enlisted in the DW competition and since I’m always on CGSociety, I need to represent and join the team!

Here’s my idea…

I started thinking that since we’re up against machines (highly intelligent) I thought it’d be cool for a primative animal like a Gorilla to cause the chaos. He will be a Warlord and the artifact that I’ve chosen are a pair of hand armour since that’s the most dominant part of a gorilla and they will be infused with Lighting as the magic element.

Here’s the basic lay-in of my character. The Armour on the hands will be the focal point and possibly minimal armour on the rest of the body. The idea is for the creature to be vulnerable, where the only thing protecting him are his hands. The name for my creature is also a WIP. I still need to figure out what to do with the rest of him but hopefull this should give you guys the idea for my piece.

I know it’s not much right now…but I’ll keep yall posted.

After many character revisions I think I finally found a design I’m happy with. Instead of the Gorrila character I’ve changed him to more of a monkey like proportions. I will most likely bring in other elements from the other monkey species, which will be more obvious in the final render of the concept. As for the artifact, that’s something that I still haven’t quite figured out yet or how it’s going to fit in with the overall design. I’m debating on either Lightning or Water…maybe vegetation?..Hopefully I’ll figure that out soon.

I liked first idea more, thou i’d give him some partial armour ( something like in the new version of the Planet of the Apes ). And that artifact fistwaepons would work very good with gorilla concept.
Theres one thing that i have doubts about. Gorillas arent too smart, so if sent with that much important mission they would have to be either well educated :wink: or kind of mind controlled/ directed or manually driven by some raider.

I like the gorilla best too, I must say. They have this great feral power to them. Interesting point about giving him a “driver”…
Maybe he’s “King Kong”-big, has a tiny driver in a harness on his back, with flags and stuff…maybe even a back-mounted ballista or something…
The hand-armor-artifact sounds really cool, like it a lot. And Lightning sounds like the way to go for me.

Thanks for the critiques guys…I’ll definately keep those in mind. I’m in the process of painting the 2nd version with it’s costume and stuff, I’ll be looking forward to what you guys think. Thanks again for the great feedbacks!

Not not happy with the lower half, needs a bit more work. As for the artifact I’m thinking of maybe Lighting but I’m not sure what kind of weapon or how to tie that in yet…any suggestions would be great!

I too also like the gorilla because it makes him seem more powerful. I can’t wait to see your 2D version. This idea could get really creative.

OK this is probably my last itaration of my concept since I have to get started on building it soon. Plus I’m happy with this one thanks to the guys that posted the suggestions; they were really helpful! I haven’t concepted the weapon but I think I know what I want and I have an idea on how it’s going to look.

His weapon will be a sword forged out of an Elephant’s tusk that was truck by lighting, which is how it acquired its magic. I’m hoping I can come up with something cool and ornate looking. It should look nice in combination with his arm shield.

Sorry I couldn’t give you guys a colored version but I will eventually color this piece. It is going to have a mayan feel to it thought.

Since I can’t start on my 3D yet cause my computer just choked on me I decided to sketch out some more ideas until I get my new rig. Here’s some other ideas I had and also the weapon.

I like your concepts so far but post #8 is by far my favorite. Apes use their hands to walk, so go with that! There’s no need to force them into an upright walk-on-two-legs mode - there are plenty of humans and other characters you can leave that mode of locomotion to. I also like #8 because the proportions are pushed the post. Keep pushing things and exaggerating more, see where it takes you - both for the proportions and the weapon. Good luck!

**With this mesh I’m up to 3,000 tris. Now I just gotta get the rest of his armour done…easier said than done though =) Hope you guys like it!

–Made some minor tweaks from the concept. I shrunk the head a tiny bit and the legs too to push the proportions & a better silhouette. Also, I’ve decided to give him 4 fingers instead of 5 in hopes of conserving polys.
