New Gallery Posting Rules - please comment

#61

Read the new rules and I’m down with it …

Are the older threads grandfathered? I’ve been posting WIP artwork in the 2D section and getting some great (usable) feedback and I’d like to continue those threads …

But I’m totally cool with starting new ones in the WIP section …

Also … what about posting reference material and suggestions (ie WACOM-revisions on posted artwork) … taken into account “moderation” mind you …

I feel sad about the limitaitons on 3D posts … I was hoping to start showing my proxies and first passes in relationship to my prelim design work to get feedback in the earlier stages of development … but I understand the space limitations as well …

All in all … I think the new changes are good ones …

This board still kicks …

Cheers guys

We’re leaving all the threads older than 31 July alone. Only taking action on the new posts in the finished gallery. The WIP gallery is still a big mess and we’ll start claming down there in a few weeks once everyone get’s used to the new conventions.

Interestingly, many people still don’t read the instructions even though it’s displayed prominently as an announcement on the gallery.

If we are to be confined to one image in the Gallery section, can you please up the file size limit a little (just for this section)? 50k is tiny, especially when dealing with full colour images. And this might allow modellers etc. to post multiple views in the same image.

What are the plans for the 2D section, will it also be devided into a finished Gallery and a WIP?

#64

Absolutely not.

50K is more than enough (use Photoshop->ImageReady, Fireworks or Paint Shop Pro) for resolutions that actually fit in the CG Talk layout. Gargantuan-sized images too often make the forum difficult to read.

It doesn’t take that much fiddling around in your imaging program. Just choose export to JPEG and lower the quality or resolution. In most cases the loss of quality is negligable.

You can just go into Photoshop and when you’re ready to save just hit “SAVE FOR WEB” and then hit the little round button on the screen that comes up and choose 49K (for some reason if you do 50K it puts it over just a little bit in byte size). Most of my stuff is saved in 640 X 480 or 720 X 486 depending on what I’m working on and it still comes out looking almost, if not, as good as the full thing. There have been some exceptions though.

Thanks L,
This is the info., I needed.

Good rules… I’ve only been here since the 14th of july but i am glad that your taking an active role in keeping the crap off of these forums…

#68

Just one thing…

Ok everything sounds fine to me, just so I can clarify this a touch. In the WIP forum we are only able to attach one image? One of the features and highlights of this forum for me and I’m sure others is the ability to watch a model transform and progress based on our peer’s inputs? It also gives us the ability to learn techniques and how to progress our own models.

Can we still post multiple images if we host them off our own servers and sites?

Oh and plugging websites is a touch and go subject. I like how some of the members have their websites in the Personal Signature area, that way if we like what we see in the forums, we can check out their personal portfolios and such. Is it ok to post our personal URL’s in our signature area?

Absolutely, and absolutely.

Say you’re hosting an image with the file attachment system on the forum… That means every time a new user looks at that thread, there are 50KB or so of data being sent to them.

Now, if you link an image from your own server, say… it’s www .yourname. com/pic.jpg, then that’s only what, 35bytes (or bits?) of information the CGTalk server needs to send your browser. (The link information, plus the IMG tags… that’s all.)

Seriously, try going with your ISP instead of looking for free webservers on the net. Your ISP probably gives you 10mb of space per mail account, and maybe 5-7 mail accounts… So that’s like 50mb of space you have, for all those lucious 120kb 1024x768 renders that you want to post. I’m on Cox.net and I’ve never had a hitch with them (Although many people have had problems, heh.) Their webservers run exceptionally, and I’ve been using them since 1998. Speeds are top notch, and there are no banners or any lame things like that.

  1. Policing on CG Talk will be extremely tight as we have been blacklisted by Websense for hosting adult content. As a result, many companies using Websense internet filtration software are unable to access the forums from work.

Oh good grief…

How can they justify that one?

I’d really like to know.

The mods also clamp down on a lot of porn and S&M that suddenly pops out of nowhere. You don’t see it because we delete it extremely quickly and ban the user.

That’s probably how they justify it…

Too bad those Websense people do not have enough common sense to see that this is not a adult site.

Does it take long for such a blacklisting to wear off? Or are 3d models of naked chicks also considered ‘adult material’ and will the ban never be lifted?

i agree this rules…but now i just post 1 artwork.my work still deleted by someone??

#73

hope my work won’t be deleted again…thanks

#74

as probably the mods have noticed i’m kind of new here…i’m still trying to fininsh my beast for my first challenge ever! I agree with the new rules mostly because some of my friends don’t have broadband conections and they wait hours to see a thread!! I don’t notice it very much because I have cable and it’s really fast. Before I had cable it was a pain.
And now everybody who has some internet conection have a small webspace at their ISP, so people can post their pictures there.
About the size of the pictures: if you render them at like 640x480 (perfect for this forum) in jpeg you end with something like 100kb. I then use ACDSee to convert/resize them to jpeg at 80% quality (visually it’s almost the same) and you get a filesize of less than 30kb. It’s easy.

I had a couple of thoughts, and before you say “No! No more sections”, please think about it.

Why not make the “WIP” section 3D only (as it almost is anyway). And why not make 2D artwork a 2D WIP/Finished combination (as it almost is anyway as well). It alway looks a little lost when I see 2D stuff in the “WIP”. This would be a minor change anyway. (People are also posting modeling work in “2D artwork” lately, btw… )

An idea for a new section: “Joined forces on cgtalk.com” where a 2D concept artist and a 3D modeller can meet and work on something together. Like Need a 2D brainiac in 2D artwork: http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12251
Those threads are very exciting. It could also be a very good experience for semi-pro’s or people just starting, to learn how to work in sort of a team, instead of running around in the little circle called “their own mind”

Anyway, see for yourself what you do with my little ideas.
cheers, jeroentje

(btw, about that adult-stuff thing. I hope it wasn’t me. I did post some Photoshop-paintings of naked girls, but ehm… I also did ask how far I could go… and one of the moderators told me something like: “As long as you don’t show sexual activity, it is called art and you can post it…” )
edit - I am referring in this “btw” to the thing Leonard said in one of his first post in this thread about some magazine saying cgtalk did host adult stuff. Not to the later discussion about some ***holes posting pornpics

The only thing I’m not really happy about is that only registered users can view them. I’m registered, so there’s no problem for me. But what this does is that it prevents (somewhat) anyone who isn’t particularly interested in 3D to even view the pictures. I know a lot of people who visit websites such as this one to view nice artwork even if they do not make any. Now they have to register, which means most won’t bother to, and we will end up with an even larger user list of users who don’t actually participate in the forum, as they will only be viewing the artwork.

Anyway it’s up to you in the end:)

Hm i don’t think this solution is good because 2D Stuff would be disadvantaged. The 2D Forum would get confused. A seperate WIP Forum for both could do it but this could also be too much of it.
So to prevent flooding the forum with topics how about writing sth like “2D Character> Bobo the fish” in the Wip Section.
Let’s keep it easy instead of trying to modify the whole stuff.

About the short critics: you can take the time to say something “appropriate”, e.g. critisize or if you have no critics say what you like. anything else is really annoying, you’re right (and i will also stop it  )

About the multiple attachments, even if the WIP section is chaotic it should be allowed there. if i make a model and have a problem i often want to show it from various angles or with different poses. i could combine it in PS into one image to save space if it’s possible but if not will i get banned for posting two attachments or will the thread be deleted?
the easiest solution is to use your own webspace, that’s true, but i also brings other problems. I have no idea how to handle it but however: i agree to the new rules and think that even if it looks crual at the beginning we’ll get used to it. It’s all for the good of the forum.

So my suggestion: post smart

#78

hm… the one attachment rule I am not very happy with to be honest.
Some guy has now started 8 new threads in 2D artwork to post his gallery… and the rest of the forum is hard to follow now.

#79

That’s the sort of thing that you report to the moderators and we cull it.

Thanks

Ehm… I just had another idea (no please jeroentje shut up now!)

It often happens to me that (what I first think is) a finished work turns out in a WIP after lots of comment. Howabout if a threadstarter can move his own thread to another forum once? Once, to prevent people rocketing there work through all the forums offcourse. Might save the mods a lot of work…
