New Gallery Posting Rules - please comment

#41

I know that in the LW forum there is a ton of useful info for people to search through, delete it after a week would be a crime.

#42

I hope my post isn’t buried in page 4 of the thread of tranquility, but I have an idea that’s better than what the new rules are… You’ll love it… (Follow up to come.)

Here you go… Download the file at http://mattswift.com/ic.zip with the PSD included in case you don’t like the font or colors. All you’d have to do, is replace the message icons (which people RARELY USE because they haven’t had a purpose until now) with the gif’s I’ve made, and bam… no more clutter in the topic titles, and people can more easily categorize the types of things they like to see. Perhaps if you wanted to, you could change the color of the background bevelled thing, so each topic (still, animation, demo reel) has it’s own color so people could categorize and find what they like the quickest. Here’s something what it would look like… I hope the image posts, I was having problems the other day.

LOOK HOW ELEGANT THAT LOOKS, compared to the current confusing (yet better than before) format.

A lot nicer than everyone making their own cluttered names for the same thing. I’ve seen for “Character:” “New Character:” “Updated Character:” and some others… “Weapon Model:”… This will make it pretty damn simple, sticking with the K.I.S.S. mantra. (Keep It Simple SexyMenz.) Rofl.

Peace!

great idea.

#45

Matt, that actually borders on brilliant. though a tad big for my taste.

#46

not bad, not bad at all, I’ll ponder this over with Leo, but it’s a great idea…

We’ll be doing a forum revision very soon, it’s on my to do list, and this is an ingenius idea that we can play with, thx for that!

salud!

I agree on all new rules.

I’ve also noticed that more and more people want more usable critique instead of : “Great!” “Awsome” and the like. I kind of agree. If you view the forum postings and see one post that have had 26 replies since yesterday and it’s only three word praises in all of them… I become hesitant to turn to page two.
I would like to se something like our star rating system but with something that makes it personal. This is the only reason people post replies instead of just using the stars, (stars are not personal).
Correct me if I’m wrong, pleace!!
It would be nice if the thread starter had his own guestbook or something that culd make a sort of praise compendium from all the threads he/she started. Add a button next to the “post reply” button that says “Add praise” or “sign guestbook” and then you culd write a line or two. Hit “submit” and there will be a line saying something like:
From________Comment_________________From thread
Henrik Hörlin__Really like the pose! ROFL!!!__Ren&Stimpy model
Lilldragon____That’s My kind of woman!!____Space Babe - WIP

If that is all you want to say, it gets said and it dosn’t take “post space”.
As a user you culd let the guest book be viewable to others if you want to.

To Lilldragon: I only used your name as an example I hope I’m not out of line here, Sorry if I am!

Well the problem is, people don’t like being hurt… See, someone who doesn’t think they (themself) are that good usually wont speak up and say to the Wiro’s and Willi Hammes out there, and say something like, “The nose is a slight bit crooked looking because of the odd texture.” Or whatever… People are afraid, as if they’re a first day karate student challenging Sho-Nuff Master of the High Kick; Meaning, they don’t want to speak up, for fear of their own work being trashed.

The thing everyone needs to realize is, the TRUE artists aren’t posting here to get a fricking boost on their self-esteem. They’re posting here because most of us are smarty-smarts and will tell them when they mess up. The next time someone makes a post that looks like…

They should try to at least add something constructive to all of it… Like, “EXCELLENT… Just a little more work on the mesh and you’re home free. Make sure you tweak the hair a little more… Here are some reference images for you.” ETC.

Thanks for all your comments on my “Brilliant” idea. I only wish it was my forum, I would have had them up by now… (As well as a whole new styleset for the place. This is nice but I’d go crazy with this place if I got the chance, hehe.)

Love,

Matt has a great idea with the organization of the threads. If it were a vote, It would get mine.

Good rule changes as well.

Leonard,

on a forum I used to run, we solved the issue of attatchments by creating a Gallery Site. Required was a 200x200 thumbnail and the image itself, which was limited to about 500k.

On the forums themselves, we never hosted images, since the server wouldn’t bear it well.

As to your guidlines, I see nothing in there anyone should have any problems with…

#51

looks nice, but I would suggest to modify the script a bit

keep the categories, like animation, character, etc., but instaed of the image just change the title

for example you choose character as post category, and your title is dragon, the script would change the title to character: dragon

because so many colors would confuse me :surprised …but maybe thats just me

#52

Very good idea there!

hehe this thread reminds me of

and whatever happened to http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5165
or
http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=124274#post124274

beaten to death, but still a worthwhile topic - means somthing needs to get done! And it sounds like it is

Another cool vB hack to my idea, would be if you could arrange the threads by topic… So you get like 20 pages of all the characters done here, and 20 pages of this and that. That’d be cool.

#54

Have you considered approaching software companies about sponsoring server space? Maybe in exchange for “modelled in …”, “rendered in …” buttons?

#55

Hi folks,

  1. I really don’t want to modify VBulletin. I have modified commercial forums and content management systems before and version control became a nightmare. It just means that when Jelsoft come out with a new version of VBulletin, the hacks don’t work anymore.

  2. Policing on CG Talk will be extremely tight as we have been blacklisted by Websense for hosting adult content. As a result, many companies using Websense internet filtration software are unable to access the forums from work.

Ps: we’ve re-enabled attachments across the forums. We’ve just changed a few settings so that non-members cannot view or download attachments. This might be a good compromise to have a feel for things.

Hmm I hope this is meant as a sort of means to ease into the whole no attatchements except for the few listed forums thing, as I thought that was a great idea personaly, kinda encourages those that need to post elsewhere and such to get a reasonable free server to store images on a post into threads, which encourages them to make even the most basic site too.

Put it like that and I agree totally! What was I thinking? I too like your idea with the pretty buttons!

#59

go Matt!!!

i love colour coded threads!

Too bad that modifing the code is not an option.

I was about to suggest a ‘wow man great work’ filter

Oh crap, I’ll suggest it anyway:

Basicly an option to choose if you want to see the ‘praise posts’ or not. The differentiation between the praise posts and usefull comments would be made by the forum users. A little checkbox in the corner of each post would allow users to vote if the post falls into the ‘wow great work’ category.
If a number of people check the box then that post is hidden if the browsing user has the filter on.

It might be prone to abuse, but if the threshold is set high enough I don’t expect any problems. The danger is that it turns into a device to censor certain comments or people.

The advantage is that it is a very open system, people can still post what they want, but the user has a choice in the content he sees.

I know a hardware newssite / community who uses this system, it works perfectly (and believe it or not, their system is even more complicated with multiple ratings and subthreads).
