New Gallery Posting Rules - please comment

#21

Things are taken care of. Good work.

argh!! not another praise-post! :scream: :wip:

#22

BTW: We’re taking this policing one step at a time. It will be a few weeks before everyone gets used to the Gallery rules. Once that settles down, next target will be the WIP forum as it is a complete mess!

Very appreciative of the comments. Thank you all.

L.

Leigh, I agree that credit should be given where it is due, but sometimes it’s just too much. It takes away the ā€˜proffesional’ athmposphere.
I’d like to feel that we are all here to improve our work, not just to pimp it to the fullest.

Ideally every comment should be constructive, just like at the Spiraliod forum.

The old cliche ā€˜an artwork is never finished’ counts for the most images posted in the gallery, most of these images could be improved in a small or large way. (With a few exceptions of images that are so perfect or heavily stylized that comments are trivial.)

One minor thing (sorry to be nitpicky!):

CG Talk - Digital Visual Effects Professionals > Critiques > Gallery/Finished Work

Could this path be changed to:

CG Talk > Critiques > Gallery/Finished Work

Would look a bit neater.

#24

I agree about filtering. I’ll respect the new rules.

A possible solution would be for the actual thread starter to make a specific request for critique in explicitly writing ā€œI would like constructive criticism rather than praises, please.ā€

Does anyone here have the creative writing skills to rewrite this sentence so that it does not sound like ā€˜I already know that I’m damn good, so stop praising me!’

Though it’s a very good idea, I think it’s hard to bring such point across without sounding immensly haughty. I think it would repell people a bit.

Makes my job easier  or should I say less stressful?

salud!

Put ā€œheavy critsā€ in the subject line. Then say somethign similar in the thread… ā€œcrits only pleaseā€

I remember one well known user registering as ā€œunknownā€ so they could get unbiased crits and less fanboy stuff… worked well, although they didn’t get many replies.

i agreed with the new rules …

#29

Okay Lildragon I agree with the new rules even though they get me big time (ie… posting from work I cannot copy my files onto my web site…so I can’t post an image!)
I agree that WIPS belong in the WIPS forum…except…at the moment I am trying to fathom a problem I have with materials in Cinema 4D. Now to get the response I need I have to post a pic…where does it truly belong?? It is a WIP but it is also a problem for which I am seeking a solution, a software dependant solution!?? So do I stickit in the WIPS forum with a title like ā€œCinema 4D, radiosity still life, need crit and help?ā€

So long as we can still post pics in the Challenge forum, thats fine. How will stuff like this work in the new challenge site?

Otherwise…just keep up the good work you do for us all!:applause:

for me the new rules sounds good

the only thing I don’t like soooo much is that I have to upload my images now for the maya forum, because I often post an image so that the people can see what my ā€œmodeling errorā€ is or whatever…but I can live with it

#31

i have an idea, but it may not be technically feasable.

Say you want to include an image (for example reference), so when you reply, you select the image add it to your post.

Rather that the image appear immediately, it gets thumbnailed on a site that only admin sees, and using a checkbox can delete images that are not appropriate, (something like a html table with: | image | checkbox | threadlink)

If people know that the images have to be authorized, they won’t bother posting images that they know won’t get through.

I think this makes everone happy, because its easier to monitor images from a admin point of view, and it also means that being people who communicate visually, we can continue to do so.

#32

I think the rules are a good step in the right direction. Hard part now is enforcing them.

#33

I’d like to add my unequivocal vote for No New Forums. (please?) If I didn’t miscount I think there are a little over 30 forums right now

As for the subject line filtering:
character, animation, still life…
I’m not quite sure on what such a rigid naming system would do. I mean if someone wants to post a landscape should he name it lanscape or still life?
Or an image of two Samurai fighting. What category does that belong to?
Issues to ponder… :hmm: I guess we’ll live and see.

However, I would suggest adding vehicle as a category.
I HATE getting suckered into those :argh:

Howabout

ā€œPlease keep your comments constructive to help me imrpove on my work, other comments can be sent to me via Personal messaging. Thank you for your time and considerationā€

That way anyone that wants to give serious paraise or whatever will send you a pm, people who just wanna say wow won’t bother sending a PM methinks. but at east if they do, only that artist has to worry about them, and they need not reed eachone if they don’t wish too either. Keeps the threads nice a clean for the image and constructive comments.

As a website gets more popular the maintenance efforts often need to grow or the programming/automation needs to get smarter.

Perhaps it’s time to add some more moderators.

Maybe high-post-count users (regulars) could be approached to see if they would be interested in doing some moderating. It would help decrease workload on current admins.

I’m sure there are some responsible regulars out there who would be willing to help out.

my 5c worth – the dodo’s have all the 2c’s

I think it’s more a matter of just naming the thread something coherant so that people know what they’re getting into. Rather than obscure titles like: 1st post, or new image.

#37

I don’t agree with the creation of new forums since I only come and look at two (WIP and Finished) since I’m pretty busy with working and stuff. I don’t get a lot of time to go to the other forums even though I want to due to this.

I also think that modeling can be a finished work even if it is untextured and should be able to be put into the finished gallery but that’s just my opinion.

I know there’s more that I want to say but I can’t think of it and I need to get back to work on a model.

Exactly
Requiring the names to actually express what’s in them. But not to delete something just cause it didn’t use the EXACT words still life or character if there was a better way to describe it

#39

I think anything older than one week should be deleted off the server. This way the server does not get jammed with old postings.

#40

I don’t know about that, maybe after a week of inactivity. Even if they’re not being viewed then they’re not taking up bandwidth since they’re not being requested. Though I do think it would probably take up server space.
