hope my work won’t be deleted again…thanks
New Gallery Posting Rules - please comment
as probably the mods have noticed i’m kind of new here…i’m still trying to fininsh my beast for my first challenge ever! I agree with the new rules mostly because some of my friends don’t have broadband conections and they wait hours to see a thread!! I don’t notice it very much because I have cable and it’s really fast. Before I had cable it was a pain.
And now everybody who has some internet conection have a small webspace at their ISP, so people can post their pictures there.
About the size of the pictures: if you render them at like 640x480 (perfect for this forum) in jpeg you end with something like 100kb. I then use ACDSee to convert/resize them to jpeg at 80% quality (visually it’s almost the same) and you get a filesize of less than 30kb. It’s easy.
I had a couple of thoughts, and before you say “No! No more sections”, please think about it.
Why not make the “WIP” section 3D only (as it almost is anyway). And why not make 2D artwork a 2D WIP/Finished combination (as it almost is anyway as well). It alway looks a little lost when I see 2D stuff in the “WIP”. This would be a minor change anyway. (People are also posting modeling work in “2D artwork” lately, btw… )
An idea for a new section: “Joined forces on cgtalk.com” where a 2D concept artist and a 3D modeller can meet and work on something together. Like Need a 2D brainiac in 2D artwork: http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12251
Those threads are very exciting. It could also be a very good experience for semi-pro’s or people just starting, to learn how to work in sort of a team, instead of running around in the little circle called “their own mind”
Anyway, see for yourself what you do with my little ideas.
cheers, jeroentje
(btw, about that adult-stuff thing. I hope it wasn’t me. I did post some Photoshop-paintings of naked girls, but ehm… I also did ask how far I could go… and one of the moderators told me something like: “As long as you don’t show sexual activity, it is called art and you can post it…” )
edit - I am referring in this “btw” to the thing Leonard said in one of his first post in this thread about some magazine saying cgtalk did host adult stuff. Not to the later discussion about some ***holes posting pornpics
The only thing I’m not really happy about is that only registered users can view them. I’m registered, so there’s no problem for me. But what this does is that it prevents (somewhat) anyone who isn’t particularly interested in 3D to even view the pictures. I know a lot of people who visit websites such as this one to view nice artwork even if they do not make any. Now they have to register, which means most won’t bother to, and we will end up with an even larger user list of users who don’t actually participate in the forum, as they will only be viewing the artwork.
Anyway it’s up to you in the end:)

Hm i don’t think this solution is good because 2D Stuff would be disadvantaged. The 2D Forum would get confused. A seperate WIP Forum for both could do it but this could also be too much of it.
So to prevent flooding the forum with topics how about writing sth like “2D Character> Bobo the fish” in the Wip Section.
Let’s keep it easy instead of trying to modify the whole stuff.
About the short critics: you can take the time to say something “appropriate”, e.g. critisize or if you have no critics say what you like. anything else is really annoying, you’re right (and i will also stop it
)
About the multiple attachments, even if the WIP section is chaotic it should be allowed there. if i make a model and have a problem i often want to show it from various angles or with different poses. i could combine it in PS into one image to save space if it’s possible but if not will i get banned for posting two attachments or will the thread be deleted?
the easiest solution is to use your own webspace, that’s true, but i also brings other problems. I have no idea how to handle it but however: i agree to the new rules and think that even if it looks crual at the beginning we’ll get used to it. It’s all for the good of the forum.
So my suggestion: post smart ![]()
hm… the one attachment rule I am not very happy with to be honest.
Some guy has now started 8 new threads in 2D artwork to post his gallery… and the rest of the forum is hard to follow now.
Ehm… I just had another idea (no please jeroentje shut up now!)
It often happens to me that (what I first think is) a finished work turns out in a WIP after lots of comment. Howabout if a threadstarter can move his own thread to another forum once? Once, to prevent people rocketing there work through all the forums offcourse. Might save the mods a lot of work…
there’s another aspect to all those praises…
often i find myself taking the time to post some valueable c&c - then i look at the thread a day later and after my reply there are 10-15 praise posts lingering around, so my reply which was supposed to help that guy out is literally drowned in this whole swamp of non-constructiveness
so my point is: i don’t think it’s enough to leave it to the artist to say if they want praise or not, because it kind of ruins the experience for every user that’s interested in learning and teaching something on these forums
you also have to consider this (this is important ): this "i only want c&c will not work anyway imo, because i think those praisers usually don’t read the text around the pretty pictures anyway (“sorry i haven’t read the whole thread, just wanted to praise your awesome stuff, you are my god”)
i know very well that there’s no practical solution to this yet, as you don’t want to modify the code, and even if you’d allow that…filtering out this sort of stuff isn’t possible
i guess you have to place those rules in a way everybody sees them, because as leonard already said - a lot of people don’t bother / haven’t even heard of them (on that new graphical banner? although this might take it a bit far…but hey - i guess most serious people in here would take that risk to stop all this drifting away into … whatever)
Just a quick note: I’m the kind of dozy sod who only just noticed this thread (yeah, it’s sticky, I know) so it might be an idea to e-mail or PM everyone with the new rules. e-mailing would be good also for the occasional visitors.
OKeee, agreeing pretty much with the rules… although I’m not sure how one attachment only works out for the WIP forums. Mebbe you could allow more if requested (as regarding the wireframes).
As for the porn and S&M… you guys must be real quick on that 'cause I’ve never seen any :surprised
A good prog for file compression if you can’t afford Photoshop/whatever would be GIMP as it automatically bring up an options dialog including compression level with preview and byte size whenever you ‘save as…’
Oh, and to answer a question: 50Kb is actually 51200 (or 50*(2^10)) bytes which is due to the nature of memory addressing.
regards, Paul
Very glad in the main to hear of the new more moderated approach as I’d stopped looking at a lot of posts bar the rated stuff cos on 56k you get sick of a slowly opening thread that really only often annoys you. However a couple of points do jar.
I see no problem at all with untextured work and just like most like at some point to view wireframes, I like to see examples of untextured models even if they have been textured, as texturing can cause so much distortion of a model that it make or break it. I always like a reference as to how strong the underlying modelling is and part of showing the work is not just for critique, but surely so we all get to learn from each other.
I have never seen any ‘porn’ or S&M here, but I do wonder where any line is drawn here. Though not so much in 3D(as yet) one of the most prolific subjects in the whole history of all art(s) is sex. I personally detest the word ‘porn’ for all the historical and cultural garbage that it drags along with it as well as it’s usage to not deal with issues rather than articulate them. Basically should anyones work submitted be very sexually based would it then be automatically deleted and if so isn’t that a tad ridiculous given the role of art in every culture?
I’m new here (at least as a member), so I might be way off, but isn’t the real praise in the stars? Seems like they’re the ultimate thing around here to say, “Wow! Everyone check this out!” It looks to me like a lot of people just leave a quick message so they can give the artist some well-deserved stars. If I’m right, and the replies and ratings are connected, would it be possible to make a way for users to give stars but no comment at all? That might cut down on quite a bit of the problem. You might even consider letting visitors get in on the rating shenanigans, although that could be abused. Hope this helps. :wavey:
Edit: Ha! My mistake. Missed the obvious little ratings option down in the corner while browsing.
I’ll be quiet now.
Nothing to add, I would just like to thank the mods & admins for all that they do in keeping cgtalk great, while still keeping it free. You guys do a lot of work and quite a bit of it goes unnoticed. Part of what makes cgtalk so great are the admins & mods…
well the rules are ok, but your moderators are out of line.
Why was my Demonic character thread removed, huh?
There were 4 images in the post, but they were linked with thumbnails, whats the big f’ckin deal man? The rules say you can link the images if there are more than one picture.
Looks like your moderators are on a power trip.
Last time I post in this ridiculous forum. God damn dictatorship.

Hello, i 've read the forum rules. And because of that when made my new thread with 2 images i hosted the pictures in my site (If you wish to post more artwork than the limitation above, please host the images on your own web hosting space and link the images) … well thats what i’ve done. But my thread have been removed, were the pictures too heavy? 150kb each? or i made a mistake of some kind i don’t know
Well if somebody can explane it to me, please ?
The name of the thread was Good % Evil twins

Cgtalk recently had an overload on it’s server, some new posts/threads were lost because of corrupted data files. They restored data with an older backup, that means that posts/threads created after the last backup were lost.
Take a look at this thread for more information
please take special note to this section:
"Include the type of your image, e.g.
“Still life: my desk”, “Character: Major Kusanagi Ghost in the Shell”, “Animation: Alien Song”, etc. This helps people filter through and only view what they want to. "
dgpilot sorry if these new rules are not to your liking, but we have to maintain a certain level of professionalism on our forums. Our moderators are doing a great job, it’s just a matter or reading what’s written on your part. Sorry you won’t be posting here anymore, but you will miss out on some great crits and comments this bunch gives…
salud!
