New Edit Sphere.

So after giving the new edit sphere options adequate time to be tested I thought I’d post my views and issues.

  • I do think its a step in the right direct. I like how you can change the axis easily and quickly with just a mouse click. I am a bit confused on why when we change back and forth between the translation and rotation manipulators that we need to do this to change the axis manually instead of just clicking on the desired axis as we do with the default edit sphere. I see the control this gives, but seems to slow down the workflow as well.

-I’d like to be able to adjust the opacity of the shading around the edit sphere.

-For some reason setting a shortcut to change to the scale manipulator isn’t working for me. I believe Thomas stated that he was having some issues with the scale manipulator, having actually used the new manipulators in detail now I believe I can confirm that, it seems to just not work. I can only get one axis to work, no matter what I change in the block or what I click. Though I had similar issues with the default edit sphere, seeing as I rarely scaled, I wasn’t too concerned with it. But it should be looked at I’d say.

-I do think being able to create our own manipulators similar to how armatures are created is the way to go. But this is a step in the right direction.

When you use scale, are you adjusting the S in the middle of the Edit Sphere? When I do that it works fine-- all axis. What specific steps are you taking and what are your Edit Spere settings on the Edit Sphere block?

Well I can’t even switch to the scale manipulator first of all. At least not via a user set shortcut. (my shortcut is F)

For some reason when I try to click within the edit sphere to scale it switches to another manipulator. If I left or middle click (which does work outside of the sphere despite the update text) I scale on the block setting’s axis and thats it. If I right click outside of the sphere obviously the menu comes up so can’t get that to work…

Steps:

  1. Start in translation mode. Works fine.
  2. Try to switch to scale mode via defined shortcut. Doesn’t work.
  3. Click scale in block to switch to that mode.
  4. See small S button in middle. Clicking it causes it to switch back to the previous mode.
  5. I can scale on the blocks set axis by left or middle clicking outside of the edit sphere. Neither will scale on the custom setting that is defined.

Mouse button channels can only respond if the the
mouse is clicked inside of the edit sphere area. This is because a
right mouse button in the world normally brings up the menu.

Also, while there may be a technical reason for the above quote in regards to the button channels, if we have to click within the edit sphere to change to the channels why not just let us click the corresponding axis and move it that way. I do think it would be very useful if we kept the right-middle-left mouse button options for additional control, see below for examples.

ie: normal left mouse button would just move according to the axis we click on in translation mode, but if we middle or right click we combine two different axes. Or even combine translation with another mode. We can do this now with shortcuts (I believe), but this could be another option.

ie2. click with the middle mouse button on the a channel in translation mode and it will move in that axis and rotate in a defined axis set in the custom settings.

Kind of a mix and matching of control and flexibility.

what are your Edit Spere settings on the Edit Sphere block?

And the settings are at default. I just switched from default to the new manipulator option.

Ok. I figured out a few things with it. The reason I was having issues with selecting is that I couldn’t figure out that it wasn’t working like the default setup does. Mainly that I can’t grab the handles, I have to grab the button. Something that should be consistent between the two. Ok. I can left click and scale, but sometimes that doesn’t work. This is odd.

I definetly can’t grab the button to scale it switches as I said.
