Network Job Assignment not working with Backburner

#1

I’ve just recently installed 3DS Max 2012 64-bit and VRay 2.20.03 on my working machine (Win 7) and render slave (Win XP). I also installed Backburner 2012 but couldn’t get this to work so following threads on other forums have reverted to Backburner 2008 which worked fine – the manager on my machine starts ok, the server on my render slave is accepted.

The problem I have is that when I go to Network Job Assignment in Max and try to connect to my server nothing shows up. If I unclick the automatic search for the subnet mask and enter the IP address of my server and then hit connect the following error message comes up: Connection Refused – Service Not Installed on Host Computer.

I’ve tried hitting the advanced button and trying to submit the job as 32 bit instead of 64 but get the same error message. I’m stuck! I can’t understand why Backburner Manager and Monitor can see the Server ok but Max can’t :S

Has anyone got any ideas? Thanks in advance for any help.

To be honest I always found Backburner to be a bit of a hassle. I know it is free when you buy Max and one shouldn’t complain about free things, but I got to the point where I actually looked elsewhere for my net rendering needs. The biggest issue was trying to find support anytime I ran into an error or troubles. I am not sure if Autodesk has a dedicated Backburner team but anytime I would post anything it would take forever to get an answer on it.

If you have a couple machines you could try Deadline from Thinkbox. With 2 computers you do not need a license and it is much more reliable than Backburner. They have a dedicated support team who can answer any question you might have. Great people and a great tool.

Deadline

Hope this helps

Hi Nat

Welcome to the forum. Please do a search regarding this problem and you will find many threads. There are some problems regarding BB2012. I´ve had major problems but finally got it to work by uninstalling BB2012 and install 2008.

Yes, this worked for me too - uninstalled 2012 and reinstalled 2008.

Part of the problem also turned out to be the automatic search on the render slave’s Backburner server - I had changed my main working machine which was acting as the manager so had to enter the IP address of this new machine in the server’s subnet mask instead of it searching automatically.
