Nested 3D Layer is rotated in parent composition

#1

I have a composition that contains several 3d layers, rotated to where I need them. However, when I go to composit this composition into another composition, the layers are all rotated dramatically (They still appear fine in the nested composition). How do I preserve the look of the layers?

Turn off “Collapse Transforms”? I’m not sure how you mean though - post some images so that we can see what is going on. Also your time line - at least so that we can tell what is on/off.

I can’t post images presently, but here’s the setup: I have a big circular spiraling cloud layer that I made 3d and angled to fit the perspective of the scene. It looks fine within the composition where it’s animated, but if I nest that composition within any other it tilts dramatically to the side. This only happens with the 3D layer. There are 2D layers in the composition and they are unaffected.

ah, there we go. Turned on the layer’s Collapse Transform button in the parent pallette

Unless I put THAT composition in another composition. Then it screws up and nothing seems to be able to fix it.

If you have 2D layers mixed with 3D - you will sometimes get abnormalities, especially if your 2D layers are on-top of or mixed in with the 3D and the 3D layers have collapse transform on them. Put your 2D layers above the 3D layer and the camera.

Another thing is that when you use a camera in the main comp - using a camera in a nested comp with collapse transforms just doesn’t work. The main comps camera takes over. Best solution would be to copy the camera from the nested comp and then paste it into your main. When you pre-compose, using a camera is fine if you only intend on using the footage as a 2D asset - once you convert it to 3D and collapse the transforms you are basically telling AfterEffects to ignore the pre-comp camera.

Well, how should it? You are doing it all wrong. Suzanne has the right answer - using 3D cameras inside CT’ed pre-comps changes the projection matrix of the containing comp, thus resulting in incorrect behavior. Only the topmost comp must contain a valid 3D camera. Otherwise only non-CT’ed layers can be used.
