Need Scripts for upcoming FXWars challenge: Plane Crash

Hey guys
I need a mini script for an upcoming Visual FX challenge for the FXWars forum.
The challenge will be Plane crash and it deals with the crash of a commercial plane.

How and where I leave to the discretion of the writers.
the idea would be for the people in the forum to follow the script as close as possible.

Are you guys interested?

I’m interested… I only have a few thoughts.

To start is when is the challenge… how much time do we have? We can even make it into a MSWC theme, that way you have at least 3 or maybe even 4 scripts… but that would be for one or two weeks from now.
Currently I time as well so I need to have at least an idea for how urgent the need is.

Second… let me put on my screenwriter cap, right… Second to us screenwriters what makes a screenplay interesting are characters and dialogue mostly, and I don’t think that is really the objective of a plane crash sequence for the FXwars.
Which brings me to point three, which is the format. I think for a plane crash the screenplay, sequence of events would consist of roughly 1/2 a page just going down a list of what happens, which sounds a little boring. The best way to go about this would be to make a storyboard, but since you ask for scripts is that part of the FX crews or are you asking us to come up with a crash sequence in any format?

Finally how long are those entries about to be in the end? From what I have seen in the fxwars past, the end results were very small clips, maybe 30 sec but not longer. A script for 30 seconds would be rather short and very hard since it is so easy to overdo it on paper and it ends up being 6 minutes at least.

So that are some of my ideas. Am all for it though, would be cool to see something I imagined into a semi proffesional FX shot.

We will go live with this in late August after the TWISTER challenge.

Imagine that you are commissioned to come up with a short script for a 2 minute film about a commercial plane crash.
You may do a full screeplay with character an all, Or you may just concentrate in the crash sequence.

I would keep the story short betweem 30 seconds to 2 minutes…

You can be creatice on how you do it…

this sounds like a fun little excercise and it’ll be cool to see what people come up with. i’ll try and whip together a script as well.

granted, i’m the new guy. But i’m actually a screenwriter who is trying to learn a bit about CG so I don’t look like an idiot when you guys are ruling the world of entertainment.

I have a few ideas

  1. Have the entire scene take place in reverse … so there is a bit of a mystery as to how the crash happened in the first place… was their pilot misfunction… a bomb… maybe a mechanic forgot to do something… aliens?

my story idea (to do in reverse).

A plane is flying high. . The man opens his brief case. There is a bomb in there.

A kid strolling through the plane drops his teddybear, a normal looking man picks it up and hands it to him.

He is nervous. He gets up and announces that he has a bomb and wants money from everyone. A US Marshall sneaks into view and shoots him. The man lands on his breifcase. The bomb explodes.

We see the plane slowly slipping in two. One by one a person is falling out until the fuselage is split in two. It is heading for a patch of farm that at a fast pace. Everything slowly turns into fire.

The camera shot pans to a view from a farmhouse at the crack of dawn. The sky is empty and within 2 seconds three large portions of the plan tornado down into it.

We see the farmer’s truck stop in the middle of the inferno. Down below we see the teddy bear that the boy lost stuck in the middle of the field. It is missing an eye.

Visually this could look really cool backwards…especially with all of the visuals (explosions, people falling out of planes, etc) in rewind. It could be done to very simple music as well.

Idea for this is that it’s all done in an old silent move style, with screens coming up with words and then showing a scene.

"A Brief History of Aeronautics"

"Early Advances"
Scene: 
Man with wings attached jumps off a cliff and flaps really hard. He maintains flight for a couple seconds. The wings fall apart and he goes tumbling down.
Scene: 
Man running with a hangglider. Trips and slams face first into ground. A small fire starts and an assistant runs up and stomps him out.

"Eventual Successes"
Scene:
Rickety old plane flies along. Camera pans with it and all is going well.

"Sorta..."
Scene:
Same plane crashes into a mountain and bursts into flames.

"Planes Evolved"
Scene:
Quick clips of modern planes and rocket ships.

"Sorta..."
Scene:
Jet takes off then crashes hard into the ground. Huge Explosion. Fire everywhere.
Scene:
Rocketship is starting it's ignition sequence and just as it's taking off fire rips thru the whole thing, blasting it to pieces.
Scene:
A plane is flying along and out of nowhere another plane rips thru it's side. Biggest explosion so far as both planes burst open throwing pieces in every direction. The two planes hurl towards the ground and hit with enough force to make a massive shockwave that knocks over cars and uproots trees.

"The Future"
Scene:
Man straps on a rocket pack. Gives a thumbs up to the camera and hits a button. He flies straight up and then it kicks to the right and slams him into a wall. The rockets keep firing, pinning him into the wall. After a moment, they stop. He starts to fall towards the ground and they fire again, buring him into the ground. A small mushroom cloud comes up from the hole in the ground.

"Buses"
Scene:
Really pretty, ultra polished, really graphic designy poster with a bus on it. Says something on it about new cross country rates being lowered or something of that nature.

"When's the last time one of them crashed into a mountain?"

It’s probably a bit too long, but could be really cool if pulled off. And could always make it to where there’s the option of doing just one scene between the words. Like just doing the two planes crashing to the ground instead of the two planes and the other two things. Just a thought.

Well we have gotten some great script ideas so far.

just incase the first one was a little too long.

Handheld camera style:

A lifeless plane is flying straight into a snow covered mountain at full speed. Maybe tiny people are running away in chaos. As the nose of the plane is an inch away from contact ***against all physics *** the plane ascends vertically into the the air. The camera pans up and we see that the plane has been sucked into a tractor beam from a small flying saucer. All of a sudden there is a flash of light and everything disappears.

Spent a couple minutes earlier while takin a break and drinkin some coffee and came up with this. i actually really dig this little story and it would be rockin if someone made it well. even if it was completely outside of this competition. hope you guys enjoy.

“First Flight” by malcolm thomas-gustave

On a spaceship, a father stands watch at the side of the pilot’s chair as his 17 year old son slowly maneuvers into a spacedock. The camera cuts back and forth between the docking clamps and the son as he slowly and cautiously goes forward.

Everything is going good and the father beams with pride. The clamps are just about to engage when the son looks back at his father. He sees the look of pride and he accidentally hits the gas. The ships jumps forward and is mere inches from slamming into the dock when the son flicks a switch. The reverse jets click on and stop their forward motion. The father sighs loudly and the boy looks back at him as he’s moving his hand back to the wheel. The father’s eyes go wide as the son grazes a switch. The son turns to look at what he’d he almost done and hits the switch.

New rockets fire shooting the ship away from the rock. The father is thrown forward into the “windshield”. The son slams forward into the control panel and hits other switches. The ship stops long enough for the father to fall to the ground. Outside the ship panels open up and more rockets emerge from them. They quickly fire before anyone can stop them in the ship and the little ship jets toward the dock.

The father and son are both slammed to the back of the cockpit, screaming. They grab onto each other and scream mindlessly as they watch the dock getting closer and closer.

The docking clamps are the closest thing to the ship and as the ship gets closer and closer we zoom in and watch the clamps. Time slows as clamps make contact with the dock. From the point of a force shield materializes. The dock is fine but as we pull back and time speeds up. the ship slams full force into it.

The ship buckles as it impacts and an electrical pulse ripples around it before a full on explosion starts at it’s core and spreads out in all directions.

Ships in the distance watch as the explosions rips thru space at them. They turn on their shields just in time but the imensity of the explosion makes the skies go solid white.

As the explosion fades from view we’re left with gnarled pieces of debris floating thru space outside the spacedock. A small lifepod floats by, rotating free in space.

Inside the pod, the father and son sit in a tangled mass of confusion. The son gets up first and sees that they’re floating free thru space. He jumps into the pilot’s chair. The father slowly stands and walks towards the seat. He smacks his son on the back of the head. The son quickly jumps up and steps aside from the seat with his head bowed towards the ground. The father grabs him and gives him a hug then walks over to the pilot’s seat.

Actually I will leave it up to the artists to pick the one.

The next step is to start generating assets for these scripts before we even tell the fx people what we have in mind for them…

This means storyboards, animatics, models and if possible footage.

some gremlins are sitting in the back of a spinning engine speaking to each other in shrieks and cackles. one of them pulls out a tool box and tries to mess with the engine but has trouble because the blades are spinning so fast one of them has an idea and crawls to the underside of the plan and enters through the wheel well. it pulls out a swiss army knife and begins to cut and cross wires. while this is going on warning lights are comming on in the cockpit the pilots are distressed. meanwhile the one on the engine has begun to crawl on the surface of the plane puncturing the fuel tank with a long power drill. the pilots make an intercom anouncement to the passengers that there are technical difficulties but no cause for alarm the plane begins to rattle. on the wing a flap is being removed with a wrench as it flies off into the distance the plane begins to spin onto its side. the pilots are panicked and confused the passengers are in a frenzy the plane falls out of the air and fragments as it crashes into the buldings of a small city panning over the the wreckage and coming to a stop centered on the two gremlins arguing with each other and brandishing their mangled tools.
