Need help installing the 3D Mouse SpaceNavigator driver for Linux

#1

Hi there. I am trying to install the 3Dconnexion driver for my Space Navigator, but I’m such a rookie with Linux installations still that I could really use some help.

Here’s an excerpt from the Instructions file:

"Please save the file 3dxware-linux-v1-4-3.i386.tar.gz into the /tmp directory and extract and run the script install-3dxunix.sh:

tar xfz 3dxware-linux-v1-4-3.i386.tar.gz install-3dxunix.sh
./install-3dxunix.sh "

I have already done the first part: saving, extracting, and running the script “install-3dxunix.sh” from the /tmp directory. I did it by double clicking on this file, then choosing “Run”.

Then ahead of the previous instructions says:
"If you don’t choose during installation the possibility to start the driver during login from the /etc/inittab please make sure the driver is started before you launch your application.

For the USB devices start the driver with the following command:

Linux:
/etc/3DxWare/daemon/3dxsrv -d usb "

Shouldn’t I be in the root to run the commandline above? If so, I guess I should start the command line with “sudo”, but I just can’t figure out how exactly.

Can anyone give me a hand?
I’ll be eternally thankful

P.S. Should you want to see the complete Install instructions file get it here

According to the article on the second life wiki, under ubuntu linux at least,
you don’t need to use the 3DConnexion driver, as theres one already built into the kernel.

read the article for details here:

Thank you very much tktt
This is very good news.
The thing is, I still need to turn on the USB driver, the one that lights up the device, and establishes the connection. And I don’t know exactly how.
The instructions say to run a file called 3dxsrv found here: /etc/3DxWare/daemon/
Of course assuming that I had already installed it. But I can’t because I don’t have the permission to do it, that’s what a popup window says
And if I’m not supposed to install it because it’s already there then where exactly is it?
I already did a file search in the system file and my own and no file was found with that name

As for asking the Space Cadets, I installed Sec Life already, but where this inworld group is and how to join them is not very clear nor obvious…

Any pointers please?
