need help, I am cleaning up a mess

Okay, No anwers, so I guess I will write a novel after all.
I am trying to fix something for someone, it is personal footage they had someone
edit for them, the person burned everything onto a DVD, and backed nothing up. What he burned was off of hi 8, and none of the tapes are labeled, in order, and would take me weeks to organize.
I am not experienced at ripping footage off a DVD.
The programs I have to work wtih are Imovie HD, and Quicktime.
Quicktime will allow me to convert to Mpeg4, however, in doing so, it strips the audio.
I have gone through the process of downloading approximately 10 different rippers, but none of them successfully convert the VOB into an Mpeg, or other file format without stripping the audio. I have tried toasters, I have tried Mpeg converters, I have tried converting the file into every imaginable file including DIVX, but nothing comes out with sound.
This is top to bottom as unprofessional a job as anyone could have done, I may or may not be able to do this, but this is for a friend, and I’d like to help, but I am stumped.
I can clean this stuff up once I can get the sound files back, but I have never copied off of DVD’s, I don’t know how to, and I’ve exhausted every option.
Help would be greatly apreciated

I use Video Cleaner Pro from River Past for converting media files, including DVDs. Not sure if you will actually need the pro version to do what you want to do, you will need to check. You will also need to download the AC-3 decoder, which you can do through the interface. You could also locate and install an AC-3 decoder your self and see if that fixes the no audio output issue you are getting from other software. You need this decoder in order to convert the audio!

Done and done thank you! This is such a mess I could cry.
I’m a bit of an old fart, I first learned to edit the old fashioned way, cutting actual film, and than they went and forced me to use the computer. Every now and than, I get a curveball, like with the DVD thing, so your help is much appreciated.
I should take pictures or give a detailed description of what these people did, as a lesson on what NOT to do, and why training is vital.
