Need a new motherboard and ram

#1

I’m looking to upgrade my workstation, mainly because I need more ram. My current motherboard only supports 16GB but I want to be able to add much more.

I’m looking at maybe getting an Asus Z97, which supports 32GB, but are there others which support more, so I will have the ability to upgrade further if necessary?

Also, any recommendations for which make/model of ram to get?

Double check for updated bios files or forum comments. when motherboards are released they often only officially support a certain amount of ram, but either unofficially or through a bios update you can use more. Macs commonly say they support X memory but in fact you can often use double the amount if you use denser chips which werent available when the motherboard was first made.

I didn’t know that, I will definitely have to try that with my existing motherboard. Thanks!

EDIT: ironically, my existing motherboard actually has more memory slots than the one I was thinking of getting. Assuming the bios will allow it, it definitely should be able to support as much memory. And it is DDR3, even though it is 6 years old.

I have another question about ram:

My motherboard specs say it supports a ram clock of 1333 to 1600 MHz. I see a 32gb ram kit available that is 1600 MHz, but there are others which have a higher frequency, like 2400 MHz. Would the higher clock rate benefit a CG artist?

In a word, no. Memory speed has very little affect on performance, doubly so when your motherboard doesnt go faster than 1600.

yeah, I did some more research and that seems to be what people are saying. And yeah, if I was going to get ram with a faster clock rate I would have to get a new motherboard to actually make use of it.
