narrow edge loops

#1

Hi,

I’ve started to do some of the organic modelling tutorials and they often talk of adding a narrow edge to sharpen edges around a mouth, nose, etc. What’s the easiest way to do this? I’m selecting the perpendicular edges using G and then connecting and moving at this point, but it causes a lot of tweaking in some cases.

Thanks for any help.

Could this plugin help you?

Plug is excellent - but problems if you want to use with later versions (of wings), could poss try

Select edgeloop
Apply Edge | Extrude -> Normal -> zero …and use +/- to move boundary edges (delete unwanted one)

select edgeloop
Press shft L For region of faces contained
Use Face | bump -> zero …and use +/ - again

(invert face selection if wrong one, prior to bump)

Tab input available on both for inter-step positions

pp

(bump approach also quite useful for inset region - imo.)

edge loop select-> bevel edge works nicely. It creates an annoying little tri at the ends tho.

or you can edge ring select -> connect then slide the edges by selecting the edge, r-click menu, rightclick on the move menu, r-click on the edge you want to move along.

Hi,

Thanks for the quick reply with a variety of options. I’ve tried them out, and they’re going to save me a lot of time compared to what I was doing. On a related note, sometimes I read about the need to add more weight to an edge in a model. Is this referring to what I’m doing when I add an extra edge like this. And if so, what does it mean to add more weight to a vertex?

Thanks again.

Sounds like you’re using a Lightwave tutorial? Wings doesn’t do edge/vertex weighting. This is a technique used in apps like Lightwave (sub-patch mode) and Cinema (hypernurbs) to sharpen or soften particular areas of the mesh. The equivalent in Wings is adding extra edges as has been described above. - Baz
