my journey with Wings3D...

ok, so I am a noob eh… six months under my belt, thought it was only a couple, but just realized that time surely flew learning with this app…

so, here’s my journey to date… laugh if you wish, or cry at my pathetic attempts, either and or, please do enjoy your selves…

six more months and who knows… sky’s the limit eh…

and btw, how long has it taken any of you modelers to catch on to this stuff? Am I going way too slow, or right on schedule or what… your honest opinion is muchly appreciated as it is the only guage somebody like me will have… so give it to me eh…C&C… the good, the bad and the ugly… I can take it eh… will make me a better modeler knowing what your take is… so no brown nosing… I am a sucker for punishment eh

my feeble gallery… which is also a wip

The only thing I have noticed that’s wrong is that you use the smooth command only to parts of the model, use it on all of it.

If you need an edge to remain as it is after smoothing try setting it to Hard or bevel/divide it.

I don’t mean this is wrong,in fact, that’s one of the cool things with using edgeloops it’s that you can select an isolated detailed part of a mesh and smooth it without anything messing up giving you different levels of detail and only a few points to connect.

Keep it up.

Oh,and about pace, well I’ve been modeling lowpoly for games since I started and have been in subdivision surfaces/edgeloops for only a few months so all I can say is keep reading and practicing as much as you can.

This place helped get around in a few months

Hello Ibox, I’ve got into this 6 months ago aswell, I was lucky getting very appreciated help on the basics from some certain ppl online at #cgtalk (cheers totte :o)) so imo I’ve got pretty far in this short time. To judge from the screen at your homepage you rush things. When you got the basic shape boxed out you should tweak it untill you are very happy with the result and NOT move on untill so. Looks like you rush and add all the detail before you got the previous step done. As actarus. mentioned you use the smooth in a weird way, starting on more primitive objects, like doorknobs and whatever stuf is out there, try to make them look like you want using a minimal polycount, learn to understand the smoothing algorithm helps ALOT! There is no need for that dense geometry on the nose (on the cat) to make it look like that. Also I recommend spending more time on each model, I see you have alot of stuff at your homepage.

some of my random stuff

And as you said sky’s the limit

Hey, thanx for the reply’s guys… yea, the smoothing, and when to have been a hard one for me to get my head twisted around…

btw, it is a dog on the front page, so now I knows I suck eh

actuall, it is not my first model either, I had made a mistake and since found my first, the dog shown on the front is my second ever model done with Wings… I put it on the front as this is not really a website per say, but rather a time journal of sorts…

Did you guys hit the little green arrow and browse through the rest of the gallery… I think by the sixth or so model that I had started to see the light… hmmm, maybe it’s just me, and that I still suck… which, yea, I admit it… I sort of figure it will be another year or so before I really leap forward into the realm of good modeling…

and in the mean time, yea… practice practice practice eh…

thnx for the replies… it’s this type of honesty which will make the better modeler be…

Egyt… just got back from viewing your worx… right on… yea, I like em eh…

Hey Ibox  I’ve been using wings off and on for about four months or so now. I’ve only recently (like in the last three weeks) been using it almost daily. One of the things that helped me immensely are tutorials. Sure there aren’t that many for Wings BUT any box modeling tutorial will just about work. Mirai tutorials work exceptionally well. The thing to watch for is loop placement and topology. That is what will ultimately make or break you. Oh and by the way…my stuff sucks too…total noob here.

Hi Mentat… thnx for the advice… bang on as per usual…

and … you were never a noob eh, even when you actually were… nope… a natural maybe, but noob… hahaha

your modesty is cool to say the least, and I likes that in a person eh

you rock dude

LOL!
Yeah. I hope I can suck like Mentat7 some day

Ibox- You have a great attitude and determination. Not to repeat what is already said, but just don’t rush it. You are on your way  You don’t suck. You are learning and progressing.

Egyt-- Just had a look at your work. You really have great command of your geometry… I dig your style also. When I know more about proper character construction I would love to have you crit one of my models

thanx Fuz…

Good Stuff Ibox, keep up the good work. The goal isn’t as important as how you got there, so don’t rush, your edge work looks good in most of your pieces.
