My first "posted" model : a submarine

#1

Well I finally grew the beans to post some of my work

This is a sub I’ve been working on for about a month now and I think it’s pretty well finished as far as modeling goes.

I’ve been using Wings for a couple of months now and have to say I am totally in love with this program!

And I would like to thank the community here at CG Talk and at the Wings development forums for all of their help. You helped me whether you know it or not (I’m a professional lurker  ). I don’t post often but I have found answers to all of my questions just by searching.

Well…here are a few screen shots of my work and please let me know if you see room for improvement or if you have any questions I’ll try and answer them.

Here is the shaded view:

Other views you can see here ( I didn’t want to overload the thread with images  :

Wow,
that is some hard-core modelling. You really matched the concept art well when you made the sub. In fact, I love the fact that you posted the concept art. The model looks amazing - well done. Only comment is that the green color doesn’t look too metallic and that you might want to set up lights within Wings to light the sub.

Good job.

Thanks for the comments!

Yes, I know the green looks a bit odd but I’m going to unwrap the UV’s and texture it.
I’ll post picks as I progress.

wow wow {RU}Sirius

goood conception

Wow. Just from the title, I was expecting much worse. But this is actually really great work. One thing that I’ll mention is that I would have gone with a simple bump/normal/displacement map to handle the rivets instead of using so many objects in my scene. The fact that you modeled them is rather hardcore, and they are each very well placed, but it’s most likely slowing your rendering and cluttering your geography graph. You should post your work more often.

:bounce: great …
Some bug on the … (arf le gouvernail in french ) … on the rudder ??

#7

Thanks for the great comments!

I always do concept sketches of whatever I do so I have something to go by. Makes it easer for me. Sometimes it’s just a couple of thumbnails and sometimes I do a more detailed one like this sub. Whatever helps me visually.

ElysiumGX you’re definitely right about the rivets, but I’m a nut about detail

I used the grouping feature to keep everything together. As I progress I’ll get more efficient with the detail as I’m also not very handy with UV mapping. It’s still a mystery to me. I’m also a hard edge freak as I should learn to do edges with bevels as I have heard mention of before.

MickymX, bug on the rudder? In what view did you see this? Any information helps me gain experience.

Thanks again everyone for the great comments!

And I’ll post more work as I progress.

I’ve discovered Wings is the program to learn UV mapping. I first learned the Max method, but found the stacks to be slowing down my workflow. Wiing’s unfold feature with marked edges is powerful and highly accurate. I usually map each portion one chart at a time, instead of using several AuvCharts…until UVmapping is more effectively implimented. Just think of peeling a wrapper off a bottle, painting on it, then sticking it back on.

I’m going to give it a shot. I’ll post some results later.

I’ll do a search on some tuts for the AutoUV feature and see what I come up with.

Cheers and thanks for the help.

Nice model.
I think it should be Rendered with RenderMan !

#11

If I knew how to use RenderMan or BMRT but alas it’s to cryptic for me. I’ll have to settle for Yafray and Bryce4 for now

And as an update I’ll be posting the sub textured in a few days (rendered in Bryce of course).
