hey…
critique?
also, where d’you think are the proper places to use a 5 sided (or more?) poly?

My first Head WIP
don’t use triangle and five sided faces at all if you don’t have to. If you do end up needing them try to hide them, like behind the ear or in the nose or in places that don’t need to deform. It hurts when deforming, especially when trying to make good textures and painting good weights. That’s what I hear anyway.
Is this your first head in Wings or your first 3d head period?
If it’s the first time modeling a head in 3d your doing a fantastic job!
The placement of the features (eyes, nose, and mouth) look accurate to me, with the eyes in particular being hard to place correctly. And the blank for the ear looks good.
Also if you could show a ortho view down the z and x axis it would show the placement of features well.
Good job, in my opinion, please keep us up to date. I’d like to see the progress on this one.
It seems pretty darn reasonable to use poles and ngons as a means of collecting and organizing other edge-loops. You generally want to factor ngons and poles away from places of high-curvature and shuffle them to places on the model that are either hidden OR … relatively FLAT. If you pick a FLAT static spot like an area in front of the ears (assuming there are not huge jaw muscles to be animated). Artifacts won’t show up unless the NGON/POLE tears and deforms it’s neighbors and than won’t matter so much so long are you have a BUFFER of flatness and extra edge loops near your NGON/POLE.
I hope that makes good sense.
10x for the comments guys,
my first humanoid in 3d, first model in wings and you just gotta love this software.
anyways, i think i got the hang of the ngons and poles and such, thanks.
eyelids giving me a problem, they look ok but in way ready for animation, any tips?
2 Orthos till next time, just started the ears and working my way down…

the space between the nose and the lips is too long
it almost looks like the cheek bones are beside the mouth. If they’re dimples they should not have the shape of the cheek bone.
use reference to see some of the subties of the eye. the top loop should peek closer to the nose and the bottom loop of the eye should peek closer to the side of the face. This is very subtle though. The lines of the eye should fade in and fade out, and not be soo harsh.
The lips are a bit lumpy on the bottom, but the top lip is alright. The nose looks great as well,
the tighten tool can help to smooth out areas.
Also, something I find useful is to work out the shape as best I can in low res and make it look as good as possible and then add more detail where needed.
IF this is what your design looks like though, you did a good job.
appreciate it, thanks.
i’m using 5sided (pentagons) now to connect loops, should leave 'em like that when exporting? looks ok in wings…
