My computer can't be to slow for photoshop...can it?

So when I try to draw or paint on photoshop at my house, then it laggs(compared to video games, like 30 frames per second?). But photoshop at school are very good! On the computers at school I’m able to work at a very high pixel dimension(big big canvas) without any problems at all! What’s up with that? Here is my computer specs:
Windows XP Service Pack 3
AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual
Core Processor 4200+
2.21 Ghz
3.50 GB RAM
PAE (Physical Address Extension)
Sapphire RADEON X1600 XT

PS: My computer doesn’t lagg that much on 1000x1000 pixels, but the brushes do come after the moving cursor. In other words, it’s impossible to make a fast circel with the brush, in the end it’ll look like a weird square or triangel. But when it do a circel at school, it becomes a perfect looking round shape one.

I seems like it should run fine, but make sure you don’t have any other apps up.
I ran CS2 on an old 1.8Ghz Core solo laptop with 1GB of memory just fine at 1000x1000px.
It would help if you told us what version you are using though, since your graphics card doesn’t support CS4.

I seem to be experiencing the same problem, and as far as I noticed, my antivirus does slow down the system an awful lot (I use Kaspersky), so if I’m up to a long session with PS, I just switch Kaspersky off (not a prefect solution, I know). However, I recently added more RAM to my system, so I now operate on 8GB, which did improve things a loooot.
so much from me.

What kind of brush are you using exactly?
Some of the dynamics settings can really tax a computer…

two things come to mind:

1.) I am suspect about your processor.

2.) Make sure you have the CS4 update if your using CS4. If so, that update will fix any lag issues you might have.

Good luck

I second your original suspicions.

It looks like the processor is the bottleneck. It’s not really a powerful processor to begin with even though your other computer specs are more than enough to run PhotoShop.

I used to run an AMD but have switched to an Intel E8400 Duo Core processor and is night and day between the two. The biggest I ever needed to push my current processor was painting on a canvas of 20x20 inches at 300 DPI no problem.
