mudbox for objects?

having problems with hard edges on objects. what can you do to keep the edges from constricting when subdividing? for example, let’s say i’m wanting to add wooden pannels to a wall, when the wall subdivides it turns into a spherical shape and the edges start pulling the uv’s around. this is mainly for normal mapping purposes, any advice would be appreciated.

beside the “subdivide menutext” is a small symbol, click it and uncheck “smooth positions” before subdividing.
