Mudbox 2009 on Mac - anybody?

#1

Hi,

I´m wondering if anybody is already using the Mac version of Mudbox 2009? I´m thinking about switching from ZBrush to Mudbox because I switched from Windows to Mac (new Mac Pro with 8 Core Nehalem CPU). As the Zbrush 3 Mac version still seems to have a lot of problems - especially with creating proper displacement maps - I thought it might be a good idea giving Mudbox 2009 a try. Unfortunately Autodesk doesn´t offer a trial version of the mac edition and I haven´t read any reviews about the Mac version yet. (I could, of course, use my Windows version of ZBrush 3 on a Windows-partition or virtual machine on the Mac but I just want to avoid any further contact with Windows  )

Thanks,
Marco

edit: As I have seen now - it´s still not released  So that´s the reason why I hardly find any information on the Mac version…

Hey Marco,

I’m in the same boat … ex-PC Maya artist now trying to use OS X as much as possible in workflow. (so much nicer than Windows!)

I called Autodesk as well as some resellers and confirmed that there are no trials of Mudbox available for OS X. They told me that there were no current plans to release a trial for OS X, as well as no chance of getting an evaluation license, so … it would appear that if you’re not willing to drop a non-refundable $745.00 to see how it performs on the Mac, you’re S.O.L.

Hit me up if you hear of any developments, I’ll do the same.

Best Regards.

looks like it’s finally out for Mac!

I think boxed copies will be available on 20th. It’s £517.50 inc VAT ($750 + taxes) for the single license - but you have to add another £200 if you want the year’s subscription and any updates!

Autodesk - you’re crazy. You have a bunch of Mac users eager to jump ship from ZBrush, but you’re charging twice as much? And there’s not even a sidegrade option.

Pixologic are laughing all the way to the bank.

I agree, Autodesk has IMO really dropped the ball on this. IMO, they’ve missed a huge opportunity to cash in on disgruntled Mac users, but IMO their high prices for Mudbox will will keep a lot of people like me waiting for an alternative.

Pixo can offer me the world and I don’t think I’d want to support them again. IMO they have the worst Customer Service on the planet. I just wish there was a sculpting software that worked well, was well supported and was reasonably priced. The saga continues!!

Sounds like the Mac demo version will be available sometime this week:

OSX Demo

Bought it. First impressions very good. Nice Displacements on a Mac. Pixologic take note.

#8

I’m gonna go for it - anyone want a cheap ZBrush license?

#9

Good luck selling a broken piece of software. :frowning: zB OSX has just been collecting dust since i threw away good money on a app that is unusable in a production environment.

#10

Yeah! Can´t wait for the demo! This week is almost over - so it shouldn´t take too long to get the demo :bounce:

Marco

PS: By the way… Did any of you already have a look at 3DCoat? (3DCoat.com)?

#11

Yeah, thanks. This is frustrating: Mudbox isn’t cheap and I sure as hell don’t need two sculpting apps. But no-one wants to buy my license - I’ve no idea why. It’s not ‘old’ software: it’s the same as buying a brand new license but at a vastly reduced price.

Also, I just know the moment I drop £500 ZB 3.5 will be released…

Damn Pixologic.

Hi,
I couldn´t wait for the demo and directly bought Mudbox 2009 Mac. My first impression: Rock solid and running very smooth. One thing bothers me, though: It´s not 64-Bit. I tried the Vista 64-Bit (on a 8 GB RAM machine) demo a couple of weeks ago and I was able to work with much higher polycounts than now with the Mac version… Nevertheless: Sculpting and Painting works great so far, I have yet to test normal- and displacement maps.

I just bought Mudbox for Mac also.

I grabbed a colour picker extension also. The standard Apple picker is all you get in Mudbox, please correct me if I am wrong.

So without the subscription you do not even get bug/service updates?

Edit - The Apple colour picker is all you get for changing light colours etc,but when painting there is a different/better colour picker at your disposal.

#14

you will get bug and service packs…

this is cause some of the third party libraries are not available vor mac in 64bit…
im shure if these libraraies are updated there will be a 64bit mac version…

#15

Excellent thanks Oglu.

Can I ask is Mudbox updated {full ver} just once per year? I am thinking if it can be twice a year then the subscription would be a great move.

#16

Thanks, oglu.

ya, I was a beta tester and can confirm that the reason it is 32-bit only is because the 64-bit Qt Cocoa libraries were still in beta during MB’s development. It will definitely (my assertion - not Autodesk’s) be 64-bit with the next version since Qt 4.5 64-bit Cocoa is released now. That will likely also mean 64-bit versions of Maxwell, Realflow, etc since they also rely on Qt.

Well that issue has now been resolved! (I mailed you Poli - maybe you can do the same). I’ll download the Mudbox trial tonight (yes it’s now available) while I wait for the retail version to arrive and I’ll be joyfully deleting ZBrush forever from my hard drive.

Yours Mudboxingly,

I’ve been using Mudbox on a Mac Pro and a MacBook Pro, after having used the Windows version, and so far it’s good times. I find the performance great and the ease of use outstanding. I did try the normal map baking and it worked perfectly. So no more Zbrush for me. Trying to get even a color map out of Zbrush to use on a model in Maya or Lightwave is like pulling out your own teeth with a rusty pair of pliers.

One thing about Mudbox is that you won’t have anywhere near as long a learning curve as you would with Zbrush.
