Moving edges in direction of selection

#1

Bit of a newb question, but If i select some edges… how can I push these edges parallel to the geometry?

Please see attachment for clarity.

If I move the yellow arrow the geometry will bias to one side. I’m looking at pushing the geometry inwards just a little towards the center as highlighted in red.

I do hope that makes sense. If not, I create a quick video here to illustrate my problem!

if you’re using maya 2015 or later you can hold D+V and click on a component (edge, face, vert). this will snap the transform tool to it’s orientation. in this case the middle edge in the video is what you’d probably want to snap to.

if you’re using an earlier version you’ll just have to use the little red blue or green squares beside the arrows on the transform tool. those will isolate the translation to 2 axis allowing you to move straight into the little notch you’ve made.
