I’m trying to move from Painter to try out Photoshop, but I haven’t been able to find a reasonable used version out there. CS4 runs $500+, which is way out of my range. I’m not even sure I would find it enjoyable after painter, but there seem to be some things PS does that I cannot duplicate in painter, like easy animated gifs and perspective manipulations, as well as the obvious sharp detail brushes, and easy custom brushes that Painter lacks. Anybody have any pointers?

You might consider something like Photoshop Elements, which is a cut-down version and could do what you need without you having to cough up $500. Otherwise, if you want to use PS brushes, there’s always The Gimp (free), but the UI has driven many to madness and/or suicide. Also, check Purplus.com - they sell back-revisions of most software, you might be able to snag CS3 for less than CS4 if you don’t need a CS4-specific function.

The features you mention are in CS2 and CS3 as well. Look for CS2 cheap, (but legal) with an approved serial transfer and then you can move up to CS4 for the upgrade price.
Having both Painter and PS is standard with most professional studios.
To move from Freehand to Illustrator makes sense to me but Painter and Photoshop are complementary.
And I don´t know what easy custom brushes stands for but Painter´s custom brushes features are OK.
There are good offers of second hand CS2 and CS3 licenses in Ebay (just be alert with the scammers) I´m with Acmepixel.
Thanks folks. I’m looking for CS3 cheap and getting pretty good hits. I’ve seen a lot of artists start in Painter and finish in PS on nice images. I’m pretty adept with Painter now, so I’m looking forward to the finishing part in PS. That’s my plan. Thanks for the advice again.
