I just started playing with Modo today and I’ve been on it testing things out, learning the interface etc. I got to say so far I like what I see. It’s extremely intuitive I’ve tried ZBrush 2 (not 3; on a Mac), but I got to say I hate the interface, I mean it’s great software but just not for me.
But anyway I’ve been testing the displacement maps in Modo, and I keep getting these weird artifacts like jagged little bumps. In zbrush there’s something called “mouse averaging”. For those who don’t know it basically it tracks your stroke and fills the jitters cause by your hand or whatever, creating a smooth even stroke. Does any one know if there is a Modo 301 equivalent to that?
Also I always heard that you can open “.ma” files in Modo but when It tried to do so in 301 I got an error. Has this feature been taken out.

I don’t have this problem in Mudbox on the same polygon count mesh. Unless your referring to rendering displacement maps, then you’ll need at least a 16-bit map for that, anything lower well cause artifacts.
support for Maya MA file has been removed in 301 in favour of FBX.
EDIT: to improve the frame rate in Modo check this thread:
I turn on VBO and disable selection rollover, turn off vertice display, in my graphic card control panel i get it to controlled by application and create a profile for Modo, with most of things set to off or low quality. After all that 301 seems useable now on my GeForce 7600 GS. I notice i dont have the stepping strokes now(well alot less of it).
