Rob Art has made a strange observation. The iMac Core i7 is faster in its basic configuration of 4 GB than with 8,12 or 16 GB. The difference is not enormous, approximately 6 to 7% under After Effects, but sufficient to be noted. Other memory tests confirm that the memory bandwidth is higher with the memory banks filled in a homogeneous way (either two identical bars, or 4 identical). But all cases, beyond two bars, the memory bandwidth drops a little. …

Hi Bert,

thanks…I´m not sure if I interprete that results right, as it sounds not logic in my ears.
Does this mean that it is a waste to buy or set up those new Imacs with 16GB ram ?
Especially for people like us who are in 3D animation and rendering ???
Hard to believe…

The main porpouse of getting these machine is space and the nice monitor you get, for me still being a laptop chip. Rather buy a laptop and hook it up to any monitor.

I’m teaching 3d courses on a regular basis.
Having a big iMac around is extremely convenient, when moving it from office A to office B.

No more juggling with monitor and power cables. It’s pick up, put down, plug and play !
The old days, when iMacs used to be inferior low-speed computers are definately over.
Differences between Pro & iMac are getting smaller and smaller …

Cheers, Bert.

Absolutely having a laptop with a cheap monitor in Office a and b is not convenient.
plus those new iMac with a 27inch monitor are meant to keep in one place only, not move around from place to place.

Yes…
but why not building a kind of rack…putting that Imac27 inside…
and take it everywhere you want…just like an oversized laptop ???

There you go

an Imac27" in a rack, are you kidding me ?

You might as well add a washing machine, a lawnmower and a BBQ set :-))

What the silly thing needs is a lifting handle, like a suitcase :D.

#10

or…given the price, buy more than one and then you don’t have to move it from one room to another…

LOL

BTW: There are specialized Travel cases like this one: 27" iMac Carrying Case

I have to attest to the portability of the iMac. With a wireless KB it’s even more of a “pick up and go” i even bring it into the bathroom and sometime I hide it under the sink. The 24" fits everywhere.
