Thinking about two sager laptops with either the Geforce 980M 4GB or 970M 6GB. Yeah yeah I know Quadro would be best for gfx work but I’m going to be doing gaming as well. What would be best for maya/mudbox work? Will these cards at least do a decent job?
More memory or stronger gfx card for maya/mudbox?
Unless you are sure to render on GPU, I’d choose 980, as it’s much faster. If maya and mudbox, I don’t think the difference will be too big at all, but for gaming, yes.
I dont know, 50% more gpu memory could be a very handy thing, the difference between the 980 and 970 isnt particularly large.
Unless you have a couple of thousand bucks to burn, there’s no point in getting a quadro card.
Memory tends to make more of a difference for GPU centric apps like Mari or GPU rendering engines or Mudbox than sheer number of cuda cores.
If you don’t do any of that, or you simply don’t hammer the memory much, you could then consider faster/more cores, especially if you play some games and don’t have a 1440p or 4k monitor to deal with.
Also, a quadro isn’t best, especially when you look at budget, these days. Most of the time even with vastly more expensive quadro cards they will be inferior to GTX cards. Quadros are only justified if you use the rare apps that have strong binding with certain drivers or use particular locked features in device mode, or if you need HW stereo or deep color per buffer.
For Maya or Mudbox they are certainly not worth bothering with.
Last, hardware threads go in the hardware forums, not in GD, moving this for you.
