Moon Town - Animated film in progress

#1

Hi, all. I’m working on a series of animated films called Moon Town. Here is the first thing I’ve modeled for the show:

Original design HERE. Larger rendering HERE. 360 turnaround QT-MOV HERE.

More bulletins as events warrant. Meanwhile, more sketches and designs, a blog and a podcast at moon-town.com.

Thanks for having a look.

Thanks, Dave. I’ll try to get that next model done supa-quick. Fighting off the flu - hmm. Model? Or sleep?

Time for a new design…

This is Captain Cassandra Quinn’s security cruiser. I had several other designs, some more like little cars, more like a rookie security guard’s ship perhaps ought to be and what-have-you.

Ultimately this is the design that feels like it’s from the same universe as the Moon Shark, and since that’s my design bar, this is the design that won.

hey

Moon Town has arrived at CGtalk!

Loving the design on the security cruiser, cant wait to see these space ships in action

Just listened to the latest podcast too, and I can relate a lot to what you’ve said, as a wise person once said “you cant rush art” and i agree on the whole publicity campaign thing 100%…

…have you thought about doing a production diary thing on a youtube channel?, I’ve always wanted to do that but am not a very good speaker in front of the camera, in fact I took down the only online video of me talking to the camera just the other day there (I think though I’m slowly getting better at it over the decades), I wish that I could really get into that though as its a good thing for sure. I can tell you now though, it would be most beneficial to Moon Town and any other indipendent animation too.

Just thinking here about the whole time problem and you recording the podcasts in the car!..(had forgotten about that)…gah facepalm

#7

Hi, Michael - it’s good to see you here!

Yeah, I have set up a little page here at CGTalk. As much as I was thinking the Flight folks and the AWN folks would enjoy Moon Town, the project seems to be getting more traction here. Go figger.

Too bad AnimWatch’s forum isn’t a logical option anymore, but what the hey.

Yup, you have correctly ascertained that making video casts is one step too far for the amount of time I have. Each moment spent on stuff like that is a moment not spent making the film, so… I have to balace that. Hopefully the podcasts are diversion enough for the people, and I’ll just plug away on the film meanwhile.

Thanks for dropping me a line!

Hey Steve.
I had the pleasure to join animwatch a bit before shutdown, and enjoyed it a bunch

Good luck with your project. I’ll definately follow this closely.

#9

I love the design. Very orginal! Looking forward to see more from you!

#10

doffer - I’m glad you got to at least join us on AnimWatch for a bit there. Sorry to have shut it down, but I’m happy to be able to put my time into this project, so it’s a balance. I do hope you enjoy it as it goes forward.

torresmedia - Thanks for the note. I hope I can put up enough interesting stuff to keep your attention!

#11

I rendered out a front and back view of the untextured Security Cruiser model for those who might be interested.

I’m anxious to get 'er painted up.

#12

Awesome…particularly love the detail in-between the small side engine(s) and the body, and the engine(s) themselves too, the design work is great on the whole of this.

#13

Hey, all

I finished the textures on the Security Cruiser. See below (and click to enlarge).

And of course, if you want a really good look, HERE is a 360 degree spin movie of the ship.

Enjoy!

#14

Next, I’m onto characters. Here’s the design for Cassandra Quinn…

#15

Fun design, but I think in 3d that neck would look really odd.

#16

Hmm, right well, firstly I think it’s a great bit of drawing and design work…I’m loving the thin neck, and the design work on the suit is terrific…but I’m just wanting her to be a bit more feminine?..the head is a bit androgynous. I reckon that might be sorted by making her eyes a bit bigger maybe. Eyes and lips bigger would do it I think.

PS

I really hate crit sessions.

#17

Nice work!

I’m sorry if I missed this earlier, but is this a personal project that you’re working on yourself or perhaps with some friends, or is this something you’re actually doing as part of a company’s vision?
Are you animating anything or just modeling the spaceships?

Anyways, the spaceship designs are fantastic! I think the characters will look really nice too!

#18

Aesir - Yup. I’ll keep an eye on her neck. Easy to fix if it looks odd when I build her out.

Michael - I think I need one more pass on her face.

Zephyr - Thanks for the note. It’s a project I’m doing on my own. I’ll be building, texturing, animating everything. I’m also writing, producing and developing it.

A couple more tidbits… after a lot of drawing and designing, this is the version I’ve settled on:

And one for size comparison…

I really think I liked the old character design better, it was more interesting fit better with the style of the ships. The new designs are ok but they don’t work as well IMHO
