Modellingt/ Rigging Pipeline question

Hi all. I’m a student doing a group project in Softimage (first tiome using the software, we predominantly use Maya). I’m playing our teams rigger. I’m wondering if anyone has advise on using models as a means to allow the modeller to continue detailing the model while I keep updating the rig? Right now I’m putting the character in one reference model (continually adding resolutions as the modeller passes me more detailed characters), and the rig in another reference model. Then these are both encased in a model. Is this a horrible workflow, or did I miraculously get it right?
