Modelling Heads

#121

Yeah, I’ve been there.

I’m in love with their tutorials right now.

I’m checking those out. But is there any tutorials on making a black guy?

Does anyone know where to find some good ref shots?

another try with splines

Hey Tejani,
Not bad. What I do is patch with something like 2x2 or 3x3. The reason is that you want a base head that you can use with SubDs. That means it needs enough polys to have your basic form but the poly count should be as low as you can get it so that your SubD cage is easy to work with.
Theres a lot of polys in that head.

#124

i patched it with 4*4
i will try 2x2
or 3x3
and put my result

#125

You can figure out pretty easily how many polys will be in the head by counting the patches and then muliplying by the number of polys in each patch. If you have 4x4 polys per patch thats 16 polys and if you have 30 patches thats 480 polys total.

I dont try and get any details with the splines. Things like the nostrils I will add later by smooth shift them out. If you keep the spline cage as simple as you can it will make it much easier.

This is my contribution. I have used for creating this head Smooth Shift, Bevel, Pshift and Ikeda plugz no spline. This is a W.I.P.
Predator is a challenge don’t exist a lot of images for to have a initial base.

#127

i have modified it
what do you think

here we go

I have a UV Texture assignment due in 2 weeks.
I’m thinking about modeling my own head. But I don’t really have the time to do a good one.
So what I think I am going to do is use the LW preset african male. And just do one hella good job on texturing.
What program do you use Leigh?
I’m really going to need help and direction!!!
Like what tool to use where, etc.
And did you get your article published and on the selves that you were doing for a mag about texturing a head?

I am currently using Photoshop 8 for all my texture painting. It’s not really a matter of knowing what tool to use where because everyone develops their own painting habits and techniques. It’s really just a process of observation and recreation, using whatever tools you have at your disposal.

My head texturing article is not out yet, I think it’s going to be in the next Keyframe issue

#131

Can you keep me posted about that?

I’m seriously looking forward to it!

#132

how can i deal with this errors

#133

Tejani,
It looks like you may have some points that arent welded there.
It looks like you mirrored the head but didnt have all the points down the middle exactly on 0.

#134

that’s exactly what I’m thinking too larry.

Where can I can ahold of you or to enlist in your program?

#135

modeling by Spline is very interesting

i never use Spline for head ( just for car…spline are very useful !! )…

Larry, how many time to model a complex head ( like gollum ) ?

because, i notice that usually, people make beautiful work, but don’t mention the spent time on !..

i’m using lightwave since a lot of time…
now, i want to know if my lightwave level is good, middle or bad !

time is money, so i think that to be a good modeler or animator, we must work good and fast !

it’s difficult for me, because i’m very fastidious !
i like precision and clean things ( clean flow, less polygons ) …
but i know i must work faster !

my favorite technique for modeling, is the pt by pt method, sometime box modeling…

i like modeling… sometime, i thought that modeling is like a chess playing !

now, i want improve my skill in texturing ( UV ) and rigging ( animation, bones+expressions )…

how many time did you work on lightwave ? ( per days and not at your work )

how many time did you sleep ?

Thanks Larry!

Thanks again for everyone especially Larry for posting to this thread.

I will be gaining knowledge from this for awhile!

Cheers!

Hey Andrew,
Youre more then welcome. This threads been one of the most interesting threads Ive seen in awhile. I was also going to say that this does get much easier as time goes on. Those first simple characters I posted earlier in the thread took me about 2 weeks to do. There was very little if any documentation on splines in those days and it took me forever just to make a patch work correctly. I can now do in a couple of hours what used to take me days or even weeks sometimes due to experience and better tools. Heres one of the first “realistic” characters I attempted to do when realtime SubDs (Metanurbs) were introduced in Lightwave. I still created the basic form of the torso using splines but “grew” the rest of the body and added details using SubDs.
Before I would have completely used splines. I scanned an action figure I had to get the proportions correct. I ended up trying it again with another action figure.
The important thing is that I could see improvements in what I was doing. Seeing success in what youre doing is very important which is why I teach a process that makes it easier to guage that success.
