Modelling Heads

#281

People must really like this thread. I admitt, it is a good thread. Well I guess I’ll post my latest doodle. Nothing special, just a sit-down 45 minute practice session that I do at least 2 to 3 times a week. Freestyln’ keeps your skillz sharp.

#282

Hmm, just rerendered my old-ish model (WIP) with better AA… Crits are welcome as always…

#283

Nice work Jonathan

Juzz, maybe the ears could a little bit bigger? It’s a great model what u got there

Nice work guys/ gals!

#285

Hey, guys, here is a new head I started on a few days ago using the spline cage method, which I realyl enjoy. I saw Allen’s Jessica Alba Spline Model and I figured I would try it the same way. All crits, flames, and advice welcome!

Peace and Modeling, ride the wave…

#286

Hey guys, I figure I would try to keep this thread alive be posting a new head model that I created earlier today…and I would like some crits or suggestions. And I did use Larry’s spline cage method which work like a dream come true…

Enjoy…

#287

Right on man, looks peachy keen!

Can we get a larger res pic?

Thanks in advance,

[shameless plug]
Well, since this thread is already revived, why don’t you guys and gals stroll over to my new WIP thread here?
[/shameless plug]

I’d like to try out Larry’s spline method one day, but right now I’m sticking with the box-modelling approach. I read a couple tutorials and discussions on head modelling before I started with my recnet head. In the end I didn’t use any one specific approach, but rather just took parts of advise form here and there, started with a segmented box and molded it into shape from there.

#289

Well, I can’t get it any higher, but there are still things to be ironed out. And I would love to see how you use box modelling. Until now I have grown comfortable with Spline modeling for Human characters. Anything I should fix…I can’t get the pic any bigger.

#290

Well, there’s not much I can make out from that small pic. Overall it looks like a pretty good template to start a character from, pretty good flow of geometry etc. Of course eyes and mouth are still missing, as is the rest of the head, so you still got some filling in for important parts to do.

As for my method, its still evolving so maybe the next time I’ll already be using a different way to achieve specific results.
Basically I take a 3y by 2x by 2z segmented box approximately the size of the head and then use knife, add edges and drag a lot…

#291

Thanks dude… I also saw your model, and although I am not highly expertly in modeling heads, I like the head…nice topology…as for skin…you could bake the procedurals…

And by the way I KNOW where Mr. Girabaldi is? In the Lightwave universe. The problem I am having is I don’t want too many patches…I built the lips separately…

And the ears are also separate…I am also building a whole body with splines…and patching the whole thing…I am also trying to keep the polygon count down. I am building a game model…using triangles…

#292

They idea behind box modeling is to start with a basic form that you can refine into a head. Splines are a great layout tool for polys to do that. The end result of using a spline cage is that I can get to a primitive head that has the right form and flow that I can easily start detailing from.

You can post higher rez images up somewhere and then link to th em from here.

#293

Here is a hi res picture of my spline cage, maybe Larry can make some suggestions to improve it…

#294

Halo, that link doesnt work for me.

#295

Well, I guess I can just email the picture…

#296

The cage was right on. My only suggestion is to really just to adjust the splines so theyre nice and neat. The head will just follow along.

#297

Thanks, Larry…I basically spent all today trying to find a good way to patch…3x3 patches were real good, but I could have built subpatches out of it from the start. And I want to be able to easily manipulate the face for the morphs.

…and 2x2 is perfect. My real concern is the back half of the head, where some of the polygons, don’t patch properly…which includes making the ears…

#298

Should there be extra splines added on the back of the head?

#299

Hey guys, I figure I would post a new head model I am making from my character James B. Rayder, so…hack away at it, tell me what I should fix and what not…and offer some crits…thanks in advance.

This thread cannot die…
