After some delays, due to customer work, I have finally set the release date of Modeling with MODO, Volume Six - Building High Resolution Models with Catmull-Clark Subdivision Surfaces for the first week of July, 2014. Thanks to all of you who have been supportive and patient.
The largest part of the tutorial involves a variety of methods for modeling and exporting Catmull-Clark (Psubs) models, with and without edge-weighting. I cover a pure method, using my new Piaggio P180 (aircraft) as the example, By pure, I mean that the entire model is Psubs, and that it is all quad polygons. (No boolean cutters, frozen polys, etc…) This is an example of a complex, precision-scale modeling project, and could be considered advanced. Here’s an example of the model in progress, to give you a feel for it. (For those of you who may have seen this aircraft on my site before, this is a completely scratch-rebuilt version, done in late 2013/early 2014.)
Then we go into other Psubs methods, based on projects Ive done for customers who needed fewer polygons, and therefore allowed ngons. A variety of projects I did for a company in France last year pointed out how useful a method like this can be, creating MUCH less geometry, and still rendering fine. The models produced here are still accurate, scale-wise, but were produced much faster, and result in smaller file sizes.
Next, some discussion of MeshFusion, including examples of how Im using it on a current project intended for manufacturing, prototyping parts for injection molding, using stereolithography. (3D printing) MeshFusion has been vital in that process.
Then, onto some discussion, with practical examples, of how to model parts for export to NURBS users, using the Power SubD - NURBS plug-in. Ive recently been working with some Solidworks users, and have gotten very good results.
Finally, there will be the usual assortment of random tips and methods Ive developed or discovered, as time goes by, using MODO. Modeling methods, material choices, rendering, rigging, and animation are all included in these. As always, I will include some MODO files for you to experiment with, including some files with rigging controls built in.
