modeling? Maya VS other 3D Softweres

#1

hey guys as you know already i am learning maya  when i was googleing Maya vs 3Ds Max,Modo,Soft Image,Cinema 4D,Blender…etc (for fun) everywhere it says maya is the main programme and it is very good and amazing with animations, rigging lighting to Render. But most of the result i get is Maya is bad with modeling? i started to learn maya in order to run my own studio in future and Models are Must have right? from what i can see modeling in 3Ds max is much easier than maya cuz of it’s HUGE i mean Really HUGE list of modifiers list and it’s polygon modeling workflow.
But in maya I think i can model anything (i get the visual images how to do the model.)
it’s extrude,Bevel,Merge,Split,Re topology,NURBS are amazing from what i see.But the “internet” says programmes like XSI,Siloa and also Blender  can pass maya with modeling?
01
Is this true?
02.why does these guys are saying like this? is it cuz they used to other programme’s Workflow? some of them that saying these things said they have been maya for about 10+ yrs.
03.So should i need to buya another programme for Modeling ? liek Modo or Blender (modo is cheap from what i can see)

thanks and keep ROCKING!
IT’s CG Baby!

Unless you’re working for a studio that uses a specific package, it’s personal preference. I don’t have experience with Blender or Modo but I have no doubt they can do what Maya does and vice versa.

Don’t put too much emphasis nor spend too much time deciding on what software to use. Rather stick with one and learn the concepts and techniques of modeling.

You could simply download the trials, spend 30 days on each one and then decide which application you’re more comfortable using.

If your serious having your own studio you really need to think about what you are going to do before you set your heart on one package. You have Maya and Maya is an excellent software package.
Don’t rush out an buy something else because of what you read.

Studios use Maya beacuse of not just the modelling tools, but because it is robust in other areas as well, like animation, dynamics, data flow ect. Plus Maya has a really good setup with Renderman which is a must for top end jobs, due to it’s overall finishing, flexablility, ease of custom shader writing, and having it all tucked away in .RIB files (or .RIS nowadays) is nice.

You really need a full battleplan of what you (as a studio) want to achive. Lot’s and lot’s of research into the area you are looking at, is all a must before you commit to spending another $3000+ on another package.

yeah i understand and thank you guys  but can maya do Motion grahpics?

#5

You’d probably want to look at something like Nuke or After Effects

#6

Yeah i know that i am using AE now but what i meant is “can maya be used to create Motion graphics?” for a example we can use C4D to create awesome text effects and import them to after effect…etc.so can maya do those effects that C4D can?

I’ve never done mo-graph in Maya but I dont see why you couldn’t. Houdini is also a good choice for a studio setup. Houdini has built in support for renderman as well, plus you can easily do mo-graph in Houdini. However Houdini has a slightly higher learning curve than other packages. However you can do anything in houdini with a little thought and some vector math wizadry. Plus it also has a built in compositor that can directly interact with every other aspect of the software via expressions, houdini’s native coding or python.
