misss tests

#681

hey mate, what you want is TIFF, RLA or TGA files format, not iff :-))

#682

Thanks Pickman

Is TiFF Same quality as IFF?

I have been going through quite a few pages of this excellent thread for a while now. There’s quite a bit of information in here. Thanks for making this shader Master Zap!

So I’ve had another go at making a shader for this head.

Any C&C would be much appreciated. The eyes and eye areas are not finished. The scalp will be covered with hair and there will some changes to the geometry. All maps are hand painted. The eyes have a separate texture and shader.

#684

Whoah

Warms the olde hearte so see so much cool stuff made with the shader!

To quote some random guy dressed in black… “Impressive, most impressive.”

Thank you Master Zap!

I have continued to work on this head and shader. I have added some hair (Fur) and new eyes. The iris and eyewhite have a Miss Fast Simple shader, the outer transparent “eye gloss” is an anisotropic shader.

The light sources are different in this render.

I will have to leave this head as it is now, for a while, while I’m working on other stuff, but I would very much like some comments on “how to improve the shaders” / what areas can be improved.

Thanks!

These shaders are such fun to work with, but I have so, so MUCH more to learn…

#686

wow!! the sss and hair are very very realistic! congratulations madart!!:bounce:

the only thing that lacks is the texture  change that and the image will be perfect:thumbsup:

congrats again

Thank you for your comments, yashu, and yes I think you’re right, the texture seems to have gotten lost in my new render or light set-up. I haven’t made any changes at all on the skin SSS, nor the skin textures, so … back to the drawing board. Tweaks to get the texture back.

I thought that there was something missing…

#688

as anyone been having trouble with maya 7’s light map reading, I can’t seem to get the lightmap info onto the model.

#689

whoops, my mistake, I was saving my lightmap as a .tga a 32 bits, when they should only be 8

I switched to 32 bit tiff, it’s rendering, but I’m getting this error

API 0.0 error 301095: while defining texture “mentalrayTexture2”: redefinition of texture “swatch::mentalrayTexture2”
PHEN 0.0 error: misss_fast_shader_init: Lightmap is not 32 bit 4 component
PHEN 0.0 error: misss_fast_shader_init: Lightmap is not 32 bit 4 component

#690

base shader no maps yet

#691

sdmolyne could you post another image with a really bright light in back of the head, it almost looks like your shader isn’t working right.

#692

First of all I don’t have Maya 7, so things might be differently.

But I think you’re confusing the 32-bit images.

It seems you haven’t done the following:

Under mentalrayTexture2, File Texture Attributes, File size depth: there you should put 32 bits.

I haven’t saved my lightmaps as any file format, just a name, like “eyes_SSS” or “male_head_SSS”.

Does this help?

#693

Hi mate

i thought it looked ok, the light is from hdri and it doesnt stretch round the back, so the light is prodominatly from the side. Does the ear have to be red for it took right?remember theres no maps. Ill post one with backlight soon.

#694

ok got an additional backlight insity 1, can see trhe red more now not that its neccesary.

What do you think master zap ??

steve

#695

yep it’s working sorry

#696

I was wondering if this looks correct. Notice in the right picture that the sss seems really strong behind the ear where there is little light on the side of the face. I have a spotlight with intensity 0.7 behind the model. as well as HDRI. Is this how it should look???. Master Zap what do you think.?

Looks pretty good to me. I’d say the model would need some bump map.

Also, perhaps the scattering radii could be lowered slightly.

A lot of people “tweak” their model based on the ears, i.e. “tune until the ears let through enough light”. That’s a bit dangerous, because the ears are actually made out of a completely different substance than the flesh of the face, this material lets through a lot more light.

I would therefore suggest that people be a bit careful with tuning it “until the ear looks right”. I should probably amend my tutorial with that info.

A perhaps better approach is to paint a map for the ears that give them a little bit higher scattering radii. Or simply use larger radii for the “back” scatter than for “subdermal” and “epidermal”, since the ears are what mostly catches the “back” style scattering.

I had a dig through this thread but I cant seem to find anyone whose experienced problems with the lightmap stuff - I keep getting an error and mr wont render if I attach a lightmap as per explanation earlier on in this thread. Has anyone else experienced the same problem using the fastskin shader?

sorry to briefly change subject here but its been causing me probs so much I never use it any more and you can obviously get really nice results with it

#699

Have you tested the replacement createAndAssignShader.mel that is downloadble from lamrug.org ? It sets everything up for you.

Did anyone render any animations with this shader? I’ve got this head that I’m rendering and the SSS effect on the ears seems to flicker, looks kind of like final gathering flickering even tho Im not using it.

Does anyone know what this can be, perhaps more samples for the lightmap or what can be done to solve this? Its not normal AA flickering as nothing else in the scene flickers. I cant show any samples of this as its for a job Im doing at work.
