Minas Tirith Project || Part 2

#541

Ah now I see
I was a bit confused with someone elses email. I’ve now sent you the message through the cgtalk email system. You should have it by now

#542

Pjanssen i’ll email u today and send u the .max files…but now i’m a little busy…

#543

Hi. I’v been following this project rot a long time. It is great and I’d like to help but I have not exerience and not good at 3D, computers, internet and so on. I wrote to Pjanssen and sent him a picture of right sight of Minas Tirith and gate 3 is beeing shown nicely. I don’t know whether he got it. I cant insert that picture becouse as I’v said I’m not good at this. :banghead: Maybe you can tell me what should I do?
Great work you guys keep it up.

Sory for my english.

i was looking on previous threads and i found this…

@Phil Craigie: You should indeed try to avoid boolean as much as possible in max. It’s a totally hopeless function :P(thread from pjanssen)

well on this one i have to disagree…many ppl are making a mistake when using boolean…they first apply a modifier…and that’s what makes the initial box or watever it was look so messy…
so boolean doesn’t work with a modifier on it…all u have to do when ur making a complex building is to plan the steps…so u try to use the modifier at last…boolean has his rules…and it’s true …after using boolean 4-5 times on a box even if i said just a moment ago…it get’s all messy…so try to divide the building in sections…and take care of each one…and this way u woun’t have problems… at least i don’t have…i don’t know if i expressed myself very well…but…i think u got the ideea
i’m using very often boolean and it’s very easy and very fast(faster than splines i must say  pjanssen)
this are just some tips in working fast…i hope that Phil Craigie is still watching this thread…

Pjanssen not a sign from u :bounce:

I’ve sent you an email at about 13:20…

About the boolean thing, with all respect, I can see that you used it. For instance in 4-lf-01 and 4-rf-07 that you sent me are those classical boolean errors. (see attached picture)
Much less than I had expected to see, but they are there none the less.
Also there isn’t a lot of optimisation done. There are quite a lot of arcs that have ā€˜double segments’ on the inside. And some arcs don’t look too smooth.

So honestly, I think that boolean isn’t the best solution for modelling these kind of buildings. It may be fast, yes, but the result can be even better when you would use another method.

#546

yes… these errors appear…but usualy i fix them …i just didn’t seen that…anyway…my bad…i’ll be more carefule next time…but i think when u have to create 100 tips of houses u don’t create splines for every window they have…or maybe u do…everyone with his own tehnique…
now again i’m sorry for that error…woun’t happen……

oh …and a question …were the buildings atached…if not i send a wrong file…

Edit: i’ve just checket my mail and ur mail didn’t reach me…plz send it again…

#547

I don’t want to raise the whole ā€˜should we use boolean or not’-discussion again. Just make sure that your buildings look good, so clean and precise mesh, and will be fine with me.

oh …and a question …were the buildings atached…if not i send a wrong file…
Yes they were attached.

Edit: i’ve just checket my mail and ur mail didn’t reach me…plz send it again…
Ok I’ll send it again.

#548

Well the Bolleans… yes, theyĀ“r fast and simply to use, but always needs a very close-up revision of the mesh, the errors that appear donĀ“t look nice. I use the splines metod, but wen you have one window, itĀ“s easy to replicate it, not necessary do all the archs with splines… when you have one, just clone it!

well, i“m starting the 2º level left section. let“s see what could i do

#549

hey i don’t know why…but your email just doesn’t arrives…what’s going on…

Edit: i think aliens are invading…

#550

Hum, I don’t know what’s going on either. Anyways, contact me on the IRC channel (via the website) that was the most important thing in the mail

#551

I sent my emails to grrr_mc_exe etcetera… Maybe the mails get stuck in a spamfilter somewhere?

#552

my area:

#553

@m0og0o: It’s a bit late, sorry, but I haven’t forgotten  The ideal arc shape:

#554

Well, theres an early test of distribution of the builds in that level, is the 2Āŗlevel, betwenn the 2Āŗ gate and the rock.

The colors are for give a reference of tall

What you think?

#555

Amon, great stuff. One thing (I know I said it a few times already  ) try making the buildings near to the higher wall twice as tall.

#556

behold the catapult… it’s not finished!! i want to animate it but it is difficult.

#557

@Halfling85: I’ve sent an email to you containing useful references for 3-gate.

@All: For those who don’t know yet, I’ve changed the way of dividing the modelling tasks. Previously everyone would do one or more seperate buildings, but that became a bit chaotic.
So I thought of a better (at least I hope) method. Everyone who wants to can do a part of Minas Tirith. So you can as a modeller choose a section of the city of let’s say, 10 houses that you want to model. You can make it to your own design, as long as it fits the Minas Tirith style. Meaning that you don’t fully have to stick to the references any longer (unless there are very important buildings in your section, but in that case I’ll let you know of course) and you are more free to use your creativity.
But this also means that you’ll have to make sure that you can invest more time than just for one building!

First you’ll have to start with building your section in blocks, like AMoN-AMoK started today. This way you (and I) will get an overview of how your section will come to look roughly. To this conceptual model I can give critiques and if necesary you can change things. Then you can start replacing the blocks with detailed buildings.

I hope that this will improve the workflow for the project and that it will result in a better looking city. And I also hope that it will be more fun for the modellers this way.
I contacted a graphics artist who was interested in doing conceptart for the project today. Maybe he can help with making conceptual sketches or drawings for particular sections.

#558

Well, the 2Āŗ gate level is very diferent of the 2lvl floor one. So i do a few changes.

What do you think of that?

#559

hey amon…it’s really great…but kinda empty…i’ll be posting the bottom right area sometime
today…
good work everybody…

#560

Of course man! The question is about the ā€œrampā€ over the 2Āŗ gate  the Builds come later
