Minas Tirith Project || Part 2

#2241

@thelotrfreak1: I remember that some of those pics were available on old MT project website. Anyway goodwork. Exclusive references are always welcome.

Some tweaks on bumpmap has been done. Texture surface apear more irregular and bit richer than before. I still have to make specular map.

#2242

What’s the new website adress. Im not sure if I know it cause the website that I know has tons of broken links.

#2243

I’m downloading version 11.1 of the viewer now, and I just had a quick question. Where are the catacombs located? Meaning the place where Denethor tried to burn Faramir alive in the movies. I would assume somewhere on the top level, but I was just wondering.

#2244

At the back of the King’s hall there will be a bridge that takes you to the place you are looking for.

The king’s hall is that building beside the huge tower and the tree.

#2245

Yeah. I could use more Minas refs, so keep em coming.

Kope. Looking better and better.

#2246

I have a slight comment:

When I look at the texures that you guys used, they look a bit too old and grey. They are not very white. Anyway, it is still amazing work.

Also, I know it is asking too much since I am not actually doing anything, but could you make the models look as close to the movie as possible. It will add more realism to the city if you keep close to the original.

#2247

Um, I’d agree with you , it is asking too much

Obviously I can’t say what he thinks, but I doubt PJanssen would be keen to redo all the stuff that isn’t 100% accurate…and you would probably never see this project get done if he tried to do that…

Appreciate your texture links and enthusiasm for accuracy, but try to be happy it has come as far as it has …keep encoraging and supporting the work done and being done.

Maybe the front page will bring in some more people to help do the rest of the needed buildings with accuracy to the refs you and others are digging up.

Keep those refs coming

PS, I agree with your comment about it not being white enough…I am not really a LOTR guy, just a texture lackey for now.

I was kind of surprised how monotone white Minas looks in the refs shown lately.

#2248

Thanks for the encouragement. I dont know what the project’s deadline is but I might, if there is enough time, learn to correctly model in 3D and help you guys a lot more than just references.

#2249

thelotrfreak1- Re the refs you posted…is the ground stone in Minas also white/of white like the building pics?

Pjanssen- Got the email from you and Flavien talking about the textures etc. Thanks.

#2250

They are white and bigger than the stones used for the walls, although there is a lot of dirt between the pavement.

If you look closely at the picture where I write: “and another”, you will be to see that there are different tiles. Big tiles near the building, very small tiles to the center of the building.

Kope, I just think that the pavement you made, although extraordinarily excellent, seems to small, too cracked, and too dirty. Although, just to make Minas Tirith look more natural, some places should have different textures. In example: the corners in the streets. The only problem with this is the fact if computers will be capable to run the realtime viewer at reasonable fps.

Keep up the good job. For the moment I am busy but I promise that I will post a lot more refs.
For the moment have a nice day.

P.S.
By the way, I don’t know if you mind Pjanseen, but I will try to get some experienced modellers from other forums to join the project.

#2251

So…I check up on this project every day. Its wonderful. I happen to notice a lot more comments are made when a big relsease is about to happen (more press and such). Maybe, to get more people working and more good advertising, make smaller, but more frequent releases…if possible. I have no expertise whatsoever in 3D design…just a suggestion…but I think it is one of the the coolest things in the world. Keep going…cant wait until its done!

#2252

@thelotrfreak1:
As for the textures it’d be good to have different reference material (photos) for more ‘natural’ Minas Tirith look. Maybe you can provide some? General requirements are:
-photos made from distance of 3-6 meters (when possible)
-camera pointed as close as possible to 90 degrees angle.
-neutral light/weather (no night, dusk, storm, flash photos :D)
-no copyright (it’s obvious but sometimes it’s good to remind it)
-highest quality possible (highest resolution, lowest compression)

Skilled modelers are welcome but we need also texturers.

#2253

What do you mean 90 degrees?

#2254

He means not at an angle.

edit: arg, stupid formatting, never mind :)

Hello All

Did not have much do to the last few days, therefore I went out photographing.

I compiled a small gallery with images which you can find here:

: = > www.kilitu.ch

There are only the thumbnails, the original files were taken with 10 Mpx; 1 file is around 4 MB
so if the people of this project are interested in some of the images please pm me, with the file number and the upload /email instructions.

Unfortunately I did not find any good white stuff around…; and although I visited several castles/ruins in my area the profit was also meager (castles are closed, renovated, or places impossible to reach etc…)

Here some fun links:

Brick generator, it loads stuff to your hd and I think you even have to be online to render the bricks but it works…

freeware seamless wood generator…

wish you all succes on this project

Hi guys, haven’t checked on this project in over a year. Brought back by the viewer headline. Its good to see the tremendous amount of good work being done here as I was always a fan of this project.

Keep on pressing, these internet projects are tough to keep a full head of steam.

#2257

by 90 degrees I mean this:

#2258

Omniom-some of those shots look like they would work for us.
Thanks, and will contact re the hirez version.

Kope- nice mini tut.

PJanssen- any comments on the discussion about the texture colors…whiteness?

Thanks guys. :wip:

#2259

I think they could use a lot more whiteness. The brown really doesn’t match up with what you see in the movie. I think this one could be used as a guide: http://www.warofthering.net/quintessential/movieshots_rotk/dh_minastirith1.jpg

I have some very useful pics.

I have problem:

When I load the ROTK EE DVD on my laptop and I want to take a screenshot of A picture, I press ImpÉc and it takes a picture of the screen but the picture of Minas tirith does not show. Someone help.

Some exclusive pics from the EE DVD.
