Hi Justin.
Just a few things I noticed:

  1. Beautiful overlap in the arms on “why do i have the bowl”, make sure you overlap the fingers too.

  2. The devil is in the details when crossing the arms, but you can worry about that last.

  3. There is too much twinning going on, vary the posing and timing of your hands

  4. The last line of dialog seems to have 3 accents: 1.Why 2.Do I have 3.The bowl. The character is not hitting the accents and holding, instead the character just moves from pose to pose fluidly, thus lacking impact.

You covered the basics well, from the weight shift when he change poses to the over lap and follow through. I think you can still push it in terms of the acting.

Hey Desmondying,

Thanks for the crits your comments where very constructive. Ill make some changes and post another link as soon as I can. If anyone else had comments they are always welcome to jump in.

  1. I have overlap with the fingers but its very slight I was worried it would make the fingers look funny if I added more but I will see how it looks with a little more rotation to them.

  2. Ya your right the arms do look a little funny crossed ill take another look at it and see what I can do.

  3. Good point they are all moving at the same time ill very them a little so its not so mechanical.

  4. Ill see what I can do about having him hold the pose a few frames to give it more of an impact.

Thanks Again!

At about 3 seconds in, he points his finger twice off-screen. On the second point, his elbow comes to a very abrupt stop and then freezes in place. It just feels a bit unnatural now, so it would be good if you could allow it to drop a bit further after the arm straightens out.

At 5 seconds, he sorta slinks into a pose before he starts his arm flapping action. If you look at his hips, it’s like he hits that pose before starting the arm flap. Maybe you can delay hitting that particular position with his hips until after he starts his arm flaps? That way his actions flow a bit more naturally, rather than “resetting” to a set pose before starting the next set of actions.

At 7 seconds, he starts flapping his arms, but the first upwards flapping motion has a very high acceleration, as compared to the other flaps, which are more natural. Do you think you can slow it down just a tad?

Otherwise, it’s looking good! Hope my comments help a bit.

Nice improvements you made.

Watch when you drop the arm down after pointing at 4-5 sec, it looks unnatural. Give the elbow and wrist some delay, or explore a different arc to bring the hand down.

Another thing is the acting choice of a hard vs a soft accent. The animators survival kit has a man pointing a finger to illustrate this. What you have right now is a soft accent, a hard accent will have a quick action to overshoot and then a bounce back to rest. Its a little hard to describe, but if you have the book you would understand.

I can’t tell you how to act, but my gut says that a hard accent may work better.
