MI-24 - A Russian Aviation Icon

Oh…Wow! just honestly absolute matchless fidelity, even without projected texturing.

Sheesh Andre by the time you complete this project I’d have run the whole gamut of hyperbole/adjective and synonym in the English language and then some.

So again as I’ve alluded too previously, pretty much 1:1 3D hi-res wizardry.

Cheers

Definitely, you have a talent for presenting your work. I’m really impressed, how good your wips look only with basic materials. Huge piece of art:)

#583

Neat renders with that DoF and camera angles, make those dashboards look quite exciting. Beveling is also huge here. I would think I would get used to your level of detailing by now, but once again you come in with those rivets and little arrows :D. I would love to see wires of this. I agree with Pawel, your presentation has been impressive every time.

#584

Very well said Sakboi! Sometimes I don’t know what more to say but I feel guilty if I don’t!

@Andre: You put beauty in everything you do man! Even in a little “look at my progress” image. The light and shadow are so, so great! …and even those “plain” shaders look so solid.

Your work is inspiring. Thank you for sharing!

Hey André,

thanks again for the awesome renders for our DP article! I don’t think that a lot of people are looking at it thinking about a “WIP” bird  It’s already such a high quality output even though it’s not finished yet. Having that said, I can’t wait to get a version of those renders with final shading and in 4K to place them as a large print somewhere near my desk!!

And I have to join my previous speakers, your presentation skills really make looking at “simple” progress pictures a pleasure. Keep it up!

Cheers mate,
Manu

@sacboi: Haha thanks! Glad you like it so far  Sometimes i wish that bird would have a bit less details haha.

@pgajlewicz: Thanks as well! Yes I enjoy rendering WIPs and maybe a bit too much. The time I wasted rendering those … should have just worked on the actual model :stuck_out_tongue:

@AlexSarakapudaff: Thanks and yes the bevels are the key. Nothing has a super sharp corner so everything can catch a small highlight or causes a thin line of reflection along the edge. I’ll post wires soon but don;t expect amazing stuff. It’s all low poly modeling with some edge loops along the edges for meshsmoothing.

@utopia780: Thanks for the kind words! It’s a lot of fun playing around with some angles and the DOF!

@MFlemming: You’re welcome bud  Haha I hope so but to me it all looks still soo WIP und unfinished. Would love to see my bird on your wall! There will be plenty of 4K renders to chose from later, my head is full of ideas.

Still chewing on cockpit stuff…

Cheers
Andre

Hi Andre…I’m very much liking, what I assume is a HUD unit, which looks as if along with the overall meditative aspect I would think also involved a prodigious amount of precision modelling too achieve…heh!, It’s almost as if you could reach out and start twiddling with the nobs-n-switches such is the high fidelity in hi-res tactile aesthetic captured, with only shaders…yummy awesome

Also just a question if you don’t mind, I’m not in anyway familiar with the Mil-24 cockpit flight instrument layout. Are the switches, gages…etc denoted by Cyrillic font/text? as opposed too comparable western Gunship panels that are indicated in English

…as always keep up the fantastic work!..which is quite simply again a highlight for me on any given day.

Cheers

Hi ACantarel,
This also looking realy good.

I like the colors in your compo the
Only color I dont really like is the blue over the hole instruments.

But that is just personal.

The thickness of the glass looks awesome.

I cant wait for the next Render.

What kind of Computer are you using for the renderings?
Are you using a Render Farm?

Happy modeling and rendering.

Cheers

staaahhhhp… seriously staaaaaaaahhhhp !!

:banghead: :applause: :banghead: :applause:

@sacboi: Thanks for the kind words and that you like my work. It takes a lot of patience in reseraach and modeling to do that level of detail and it can be very bothering so I decided to label it “meditating” which makes it more pleasant instantly haha  Yes later all the Cyrillic fonts have to be in place which is going to be interesting.

@2xbo: Thnaks! Yeah almost all Russian cockpits have that blue/turquoise color on the instrument panels. I do all modeling/texturing/rendering on my personal workstation.

@xtrm3d: Thanks buddy :slight_smile:

This is a truly incredible project. I often scan this WIP thread. It is both inspirational and highly motivating. We all know how hard it can be sometimes when one is torn between actually finishing a long-term, ongoing project and feeling guilty for not finishing!

Brilliant work mate.

#593

@musashidan: Thanks man glad you like the stuff  Yeah it’s very long term because for very long stretches it was just sitting there while i was busy at work. I wish I had more time to get it done by now.

The moment you realize that modeling ONE helicopter means modeling 1000 parts
Found the time to make some modeling progress on the pilot’s cockpit. One day it’ll be done…
Plain shaders only for now.

omg! are you human??

#596

I watched for some years your thread with much interest, but… this it`s crazy ! Will probably remain in history as the most realistic vehicle ever modeled by a human. Of course, if U are one

Heh…! Amen.

Also just Absolutely Masterful, Andre…and those shaders make the whole thing pop IMO, pretty much lit production end, I think?..and yeah like many others here just along for the ride…so take your time, enjoying very much so every iteration.

Cheers

Finaly took some time to scan your whole thread and I’m shocked about the level of detail, motivation and dedication to the real life copy!! You are truly a master in this!!

Reading the post and looking at the images, I also see you have a lot of fun in this project instead of ‘must do this’-mentality
Calling it ‘meditating’ and looking at it this way is a great tip/advice (imho). It a state of mind that can keep the motivation on a high level. This ‘little’ tip helped me a lot!

And the fact that you render your WIP with such high and realistic quality, made me rethink my look development approach!

Just one curious question:
Haven’t you even got to that ‘loss of motivation’ face ever? If so, how do you coop with that?

#599

@maksy: Haha yes as far as I know

@vladutz8417: Yeah years it is… I wish I just had enough time off to do the whole thing in 3 months straight and call it a day. I’m sure there are better ones out there though. I know of so many things that aren’t that great about this model haha.

@sacboi: Glad you like the stuff so far! In the end all has to be worn down, still wrapping my head around it how to do it the fastest and most efficient way. I think UVs for the bigger parts and auto unwrap + mari for the rest.

@sh00ks: Thanks! But I have to say this bird had a lot of down time too. There were spans of 6 months I didn’t work on it at all, hence the long duration of the whole project. For the most part it was and is a lot of fun. Just a few moments like “Omg now I am finally starting the pilot’s cockpit” were a bit meh but once the cockpit was blocked in, all shapes figured out and started to fit it was fun again. Yes I call it meditating because just by calling it like something like that it takes the tediousness out of it a bit. It just becomes like walking a very long distance with your headphones on and all of a sudden you’re there instead of thinking about the next mile you have to walk. This idea helps in many other things as well btw. I’m putting a bit of time into the WIP renders just for being able to play a bit between all the modeling sessions. That is perfectly fine on personal projects because it’s fun and you start to discover new ideas for the final shots later. I had a few “loss of motivation” moments here and there because it’s just such a huge thing to create and reserach can be frustrating. Just figuring out how the HUD looks like from top view because basically nobody takes a photo from that perspective was frustrating. Then you spend a whole day on finding that one picture that helps you out. That’s the big difference between modeling a detailed thing that exists for real or something sci-fi where stuff like that can just be made up (still not quick and easy to make it look functional and believable though). How do I cope with that? Simply do something else for a bit. Learn to play the guitar or piano, read a book or go outside with my girlfriend. Or you start another big personal project which I did with modleing a very detailed White House. That wasn’t the smartest idea in terms of progress on the Mi-24 because it cut out another few months from it. And the White house has plenty of areas that are extremely tricky to research of course.

Cheers
Andre
