messiah on OS X

#1

Hey guys. I haven’t posted in a while because I switched to Mac and Linux early last year. This meant I couldn’t use messiah, which is my favourite app ever.

Anyway, I decided to try messiah in CrossOver for mac (which is basically Wine, except easy to use). It works surprisingly well, especially because messiah is mostly an OpenGL app. Mouse input is a bit funky and moves a bit fast, and I had to use the demo version since I don’t think it’s possible to get the hardware key working under an emulated API.

Here’s a screenshot:

I’m just posting this because I think it’s kind of cool and messiah actually looks quite nice as an OS X app :).

Cool beans … I’d love to get into macos X one day

#3

Nice you got it running on Crossover. I didn’t. When I try to start it it just says, that it is not able to find the aplication.

I beat you for about a month though with running Messiah on Parallels on OS X . And there even the dongle works (most of the time, if OS X is not locking it up for unknown reasons).

#4

Another reason why dongles are out of date solution for software keys.

#5

Oh nice. I didn’t even think to try it under parallels because of the lack of 3D acceleration. Is that an issue for you?

#6

Interesting enough, it isn’t. Which is weird, because afaik Parallels has no openGL support yet. But as you can see from the video I have posted, it runs basically in native spped.

#7

I think OpenGL apps under Parallels are using the built-in software OpenGL provided by the OS, and the current processors are fast enough to make this workable. Like you, I’m astounded that it works as well as it does - while there are some OpenGL errors, it’s very useable.

And you think a software lock to the machine would work better on a simulated machine?
Dream on.

I love dongles. Plug it in and be done.

If more users work with emulations, the drivers may be updated to support the constellation.

Cool tests BTW, keep them coming.
I wasn’t able to get messiah running on ubuntu 6.06 with wine so far, but maybe crossover would do it?

Cheers,

Total agreement with Thomas here. Dongles are so hastle free. Move your licence from machine to machine with a USB hub. Mine is lit up like a Christmas tree with all my dongles. Love em. Wish I could run XP like that. I hate having to call Microsoft every time I change a major component on my system. :frowning:

I tried Wine as well. No love. Can’t wait till someone figures out how to get Messiah working well on something other than XP. Glitch free.

Well i do not agree with you. I commented on it not because of emulators, but because dongles are hassle to deal with. I have my modo and modo licence on my usb memory (no installation required) . And i can carry it anywhere i want plus other things inside usb memory. Sometimes i need to work at my client`s computer sometimes on friends computer. Carrying a dongle with you is not a great solution for mobile workers. I also do not need to carry usb memory, i can just download my software and my key from Luxology web site anytime i needed. Plus you could buy modo without it being shipped to you. Also what do you do if you loose your dongle? Now this is not a flame, i am just pointing an issue here.

Dongles are maybe good for developers and manufacturers but not good for users in that respect. It is quite out of touch with reality of today`s needs.

Whats to stop you sending me your copy of Modo and me running it on my machine?

#12

Nothing is stopping me. I can send it and you can run it. It is up to people and their care for copyrights. If people are going to do things that are not within the frames of law you cannot stop them really. I am sure lux guys know about this as well. Why not stop being afraid and let users own conscience and ethics decide? If someone sees use of messiah they would buy it anyways. I am maybe too liberal about this issue, but strict rules and fences do not bring equal amount of safety and cash.
