Merman character sculpt

#1

First stab at a proper character sculpt in ZbrushCore, because that’s what I can afford at the moment.

I would really appreciate some critique on my facial anatomy. The latest version is a revision based on someone’s suggestion that I take a look at Overwatch’s style, which I did. The colors are just some rough blocking in to better see what my sculpt looks like and if it works or not.

If anyone could recommend any good, preferably free, portrait/character sculpting tutorials, I’d definitely appreciate it. There are a lot to sift through, and I don’t know what I don’t know yet.

Hi killjoykid, how are you?

About the facial shape/volumetry, I would point some things about your work.
The verification of facial anatomy (proportions, distancing, stuff like this) is better noticable by looking on frontal and side ortographic views. This way, you can check the sillhouette of the head, and avoid mistakes like your ears (the ears doesn’t appear when you look by the frontal view).

Compare the side view of your character with some other side ortographic view of a professional work, or even the link with facial proportions I posted here and look the distance between the eyes, corners of mouth and the tip of the nose, the tip of chin… they can gain some deph. Seems boring, but with practice you gonna make this automatically. And even being a cartoon style, some facial proportions still have some traits from realistic ones, as the body too.

Congratulations, good luck and keep working/studiyng.

Sorry for the late reply, classes started up again this week and things got a little crazy. Thank you for taking the time, and I appreciate the tip. It’s hard to know where to focus when there’s so much to learn, so thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

Your welcome! After all this time, do you have something else to show us?
Hope you`re doing okay.

Amazing, bro, like he said: “The verification of facial anatomy (proportions, distancing, stuff like this) is better noticable by looking on frontal and side ortographic views. This way, you can check the head, and avoid mistakes like your ears (the ears doesn’t appear when you look by the frontal view)”. totally true
