Mercenary Frog Character

#1

Hi,

Here is a project I am working on. It all began with a little concept drawing I did for a class assignment last summer. I had been wanting to make a 3D character for quite sometime so as soon as we went on vacation I took that concept and began building it in 3ds Max. First things first, this is the original concept:

Classes began again in September so I had to postpone my work on it. This is as far as I got:

This year, as soon as I was done with my final exams and having learned how to sculpt in Mudbox, I have resumed work on the character. As a side note, Mudbox has been very helpful and it is real fun and easy to use, can’t wait to try ZBrush which seems to be even more powerfull than Mudbox. Anyway, here is the detailed model:

I am now working on the textures and shaders. This is my first time using the mr fast skin shader. I have to admit I am a bit overwhelmed by the amount of parameters it has, I did not even know where to start at first. Also, most of the tutorials I have found on the internet are focused on human skin so I am improvising as I go. I would appreciate any tips or advice you could give me with it. Here is what I have so far:

Cool concept. I tought you would domore styled but it’s cool anyway. Good job

Thank you. Yes, I used the concept just for inspiration I never intended the 3D model to match it, although it would have been interesting to go for a more cartoony/stylized look. Anyway, some more renders:

And some close-ups:

UPDATE: I’ve been working on the textures of the character’s prop, the M4 carbine.

UPDATE: Finished the textures of the gun. It’s based on a “Baby Desert Eagle” although the 3D model itself is not very accurate, but that’s ok since it will barely be seen as I plan to keep in the holster. I decided to fully model and texture it just for fun.

Muchas gracias, me alegro de que te guste!

I will start rigging the model soon, it’s my least favourite part of the process. There’s still some work to do in the textures but I’ll leave for once the model has been properly rigged and skinned.

Very nice models there, and the texture look’s lovely, well done!

Thank you Mathias!

I love this character! Have never seen a toad mercenary before
Great detailing everywhere. The camouflage on the rifle makes it a bit hard to read but I guess that is just how the real one is as well.

Cheers

Lol, good point. I guess the point of camo is to hide the shape of the object, so maybe he did too good of a job on the texture.

Anyways, great work on the character. I think the 3D actually has better proportions than your concept, and the texturing and lighting look fantastic.

Thank you for your comments. I’ll try to fix the camo on the M4 by lowering the contrast of the texture and see if it looks better. In the mean time, I’ve been working on the rigging and skinning of the character which is proving to be really challenging. It is a really tough process and not as fun as modeling/texturing but I guess it needs to be done. I’ve made one small posing test to see how it looks and even though there’s still work to do, I think it is looking quite decent. I specially like how the arms deform, the shoulders in the other hand, are being a real pain.
