Hey guys,
i just started to do Testrenders on my Scene and i tried to compare MentalRay with iRay to get an idea which renderer i could finally use.
The Scene only has Indirect Illumination. In MR it uses FinalGather with Quality Setting “High” (Initial FG Point Density: 1.5, Rays per FG Point: 500, Interpolate over Num FG Points: 30, Diffuse Bounces: 1). It has an HDR applied to the BG and uses some Self-Illumination in the middle.
Attached are 2 Files. One Render with MentalRay (the left image) and one Render with iRay (the right image). Both took the same amount of time - 3 Minutes. Which is already too long for a Scene with over 2000 Frames, but anyway.
Looking at the results i see speckles in the MR Render which is due to the fact that i did not had the Noise Reduction active. I could either activate it and increase the light distribution to counter the darker image or i could soften the lighting out in the post which would also be possible. Anyway, diffuse lighting overall is already quite smooth in the MR Render.
Looking at the iRay Render however i still see this much noise. No speckles though as it seems, but so much noise. As far as i understand i would have to render this longer to get rid of this noise. I used iRay with the default settings.
So … as a result i come to the conclusion that iRay seems to be a lot slower than MentalRay - especially if you consider that it also takes my Nvidia GTX 770 into account, which MentalRay doesnt. Is this really the case? Or have i rendered “wrong” with iRay and have to make several adjustments to really get this to render fast?
Can you share your experience please? I would really like to know if i could use iRay one day; it is a little bit more hassle free as it seems. But for now i think it is way slower than MR. Am i right in this?
Many thanks for your help
