Mental Ray Satellite questions

#1

hey you all

I’ve been two whole days trying to deal with Satellite …

im a student that trying to render with 4 computers.
1 master
3 slaves.

i have some questions about thet…

1) Satellite need to be on all the computers? slaves and master?

2)Tell me if I’m wrong, but in the master all i need to do is to put the maya.rayhosts in the right folder <preps>
this is the only step in the master that i need to setup?

3) the rayhosts file need to be on the slaves machine too?

4) in the slaves i need to ensure that the RaySat Server is running…
in the administrative Tools---->services
i dont see this name… but i see that mental ray maya satellite2016 is running. is it the same?

thank you so much i need to finish rendering and i have to succeed

Hi batelcohen,

  1. satellite has to be installed only on slaves.
  2. in the master you have to put your maya.rayhost in the prefs folder. Make sure to specify your slaves ip (or name) followed by the right port. Then you have to edit system32/drivers/etc/service adding this line
    mi-raysat<release version> <port number>/tcp
    Where port number is usually 74 followed by the last two digits of the version release number (for 2016 is 7416)

Then edit your maya.env with this line

MI_RAY_SERVICE=mi-raysat<release version>

For more info, read this thread

https://forum.nvidia-arc.com/archive/index.php/t-6899.html

  1. the rayhost file does not need and should not be in the slaves machines. Make only sure to have the service running on those. On windows sometimes you have to start the service manually.

4)yes, i’m pretty sure it’s that one.

Hope that helps, satellite is quite tricky to configure.

first of all thank you!

“Then edit your maya.env with this line”

what do you mean…? i didnt read about this part

Sorry, I meant, add that line to Maya.env, in your documents/maya/2016/ folder. You can use the notepad.

haha, that’s about what it took me to make it work.
Don’t forget to disable your firewall (for local network) on the slaves.
Also don’t despair if you don’t see your CPU usage turn up on your slaves right after hitting render, it can take a while.

Also this thread may help you.
