mental ray render missing tiles

Im rendering a sequence in softimage 2012 with mental ray.

im rendering it out as tga files, and I am getting missing render tiles in the stills every 5~10 frames or so. not sure what it is. the render settings are pretty default.

So far I rendered out a pass with final gathering, ambient occlusion and a matte pass, and they all have missing tiles.

could it be a hardware issue? I have rendered out sequences with the same workflow on a different machine with no problems. Right now im rendering on my notebook with a quad core i7, 6gb ram and nvidia gt 540m.

Most likely you are running out of ram.
Look at your memory consumption as you render.

Went through this ordeal on a recent xsi project…had plenty of ram on each machine.
Interesting thing was, it only happened on lighter scenes or passes. The heavy stuff was coming out okay.
But whenever we had a bg pass, it would skip tiles all over the place.
Eventually nailed it down to a checkbox: render manager - mental ray - framebuffer - on disk framebuffers toggled off. (have to thank stephen blair for the tip).
Though make sure you leave it on if you’re using custom framebuffers using the “store color in channel” nodes.
That did the trick for us.
