Mental Ray - Grainy Reflections problem in 3ds max

#1

Hi, I’m rendering an interior scene in 3ds max 9 (should be attached) but I get grainy reflections in the scene that are ruining it. My Sampling settings are at Min. 1 and Max. 64, which takes 45 mins to an hour to render! I read on Zaps Mental Ray forum that there’s an environment blur that you can assign to your mental ray materials like Arch & Design metals etc… but I can’t find it. What is the Environment Blur called? does it come with 3ds max 9? I’ve looked in the Render> Environment menu and cannot find it anywhere. I’ve also looked in the Mental Ray connection rollout at the bottom of the material editor and when I click on the environment slot I see no Reflection Environment blur in there.

I know in Maya its called mia_env_blur and its quite easy to setup. It also helps cut down rendering times, by achieving smoother reflections without having to bump up Min. and Max. Sampling levels to something that would take forever to render. My laptop is starting to show its age, I’ll need a time machine soon. :argh:

Thanks in advance

hi,

stay at sample 1min and 16 max for test rendering purposes, you need to tweak your arch& design glossiness sample not the image overall samples, try increasing the a&d glossiness sample at 32, you can tick the fast interpolate case for slower rendering time ( but less accurate reflections ) if it’s not working, maybe you need to tweak the all scene, ( lighting, scale, mesh ect)

please explain your lighting for better advices.

Thanks, I’ll try that out now. I’m getting a new computer soon. Which should help
