Maya V-Ray Glowing edges for LightMatl?


Hallo! I am wondering if there’s a way (without having to do it in post) to apply a glowing edge around an object with a lightMaterial shader.

for example, the regular maya materials have a feature called “Special Effects” which has a glow intensity slider, and produces this effect:

V-Ray, on the other hand, emits actual light, but doesn’t have that nice bloom effect around the edges:

Is there a way to get that effect without having to do it in post?


Yes and no.

The effects you see in Maya software is a post effect. The glow was applied after the render was complete. V-ray doesn’t offer that effect, you’ll need to do it yourself.

On the other hand, V-ray has a true volume fog that will catch the same glow. This will slow down the render time quite a bit and I don’t think it’s what you want to do.


its way better to do this in post. technically in real life it is a post effect too as it comes from a lens. :slight_smile:


You can use the VRay Lens Effects in the Vray Framebuffer to get some bloom/glare if you really want to skip comp.


VRay’s VFB has a channel on the right called Lens Effects. Click that and turn them on and a world of what you’re looking for awaits you :smiley:
