Maya MR Normal Pass Problem

#1

I am trying to render normal pass with MR passes presets but its giving me jitter edges ( Anti aliasing ). Though i was looking for smooth edges. How can i fix this problem. Please let me know. I am in a fix. I am using maya 2011.

change your AA then ? Lower your contrast to .05; choose gaussian/lanczos ? Post a screenshot, it’s kind of hard to tell.

Also you should post in maya>rendering you’ll get more feedback.

In the past, I used to double the resolution for the normal pass in width and height (effectively quadrupling the whole thing). I’d then downsize it in post in programs like Nuke or After Effects. This would effectively give you a (somewhat) equivalent (2,2) AA but the difference is all of the points would be accurate data values. I don’t remember who told me that it was a “heinous hack” but it worked for me with very little increase in rendering time even at high resolutions. Try it out on a frame and see if you like the results.

But if you don’t use AA, you either have to blur the results to make it smooth again or use some kind of matrix division etc etc etc - What’s worse, when you do use AA, the result isn’t actual data points so your results sometimes looks strange.

So even though doubling from say a 640 x 480 render to a 1,280 x 960 render (then downsizing) is a “hack”, I find other methods of dealing with jaggy’s much more painful. I say try it out and let us know if that solved your issue.
