maya - how to have collision spheres for hair follow the mesh

I posted this yesterday in the general character rigging section - but it’s really a Maya question.

If I have a model with hair, and then setup collision sphere to avoid hair penetrating the mesh - how do I attach the collision sphere to the mesh - so that the sphere follows the mesh when it’s animated?

I tried creating a rigid skin between the sphere and the skeleton, but Maya doesn’t allow that.

Parent the sphere to the nearest and functional joint.
