I am not sure what you mean. But this is from what I think you meant.

Maya (Art section) and Game Engine (Programming) is two different monsters. Both used in Game Industry to Film Industry. But if you are going to want to become an artist, good for you:) If you are going to want to program, good for you:)

This comes from my experience:

All Modeling/Designing stages are first done in Maya (or any 3D packages). For your knowledge, Modeling for Games and Movies are two different things. Both are modeling. But there are many things that a modeler for games have to know that a modeler for film/high-poly doesn’t have to.

Then the 3D model goes through an Export/Import utility to the engine where programmers create the “gameplay mechanics” all other things to create a game.

Usually, it is very hard to find a professional who can do both program and design at a professional level because both takes some time to master.

It depends on where you want to work? Film/Broadcast Industry? Game Industry?

An artist most likely will never touch the C++ side of the engine. They will and eventualy have to learn to operate the Game Engine each studio uses to create a game. Most of the time it is the artist job to make sure that they create everything correct by using the game engine of the studio they work in. But Programming is never usually done. By the time you finish one model, you will have a pile of sketches at your desk to start.

In you are going into Film/Broadcast, it is better to master Maya and one other Compositing programs (Combustion/After Effects/Shake/Digital Fusion). That is a more useful combination there.

It is always a plus to say in your resume that you are decent/very good at C++ in addition to the Art skills when you go for a Game development job.
