Maya: Adding sound while modelling

Hi guys,

I have two locators in my scene and they have the distance between them measured. What I would like to do is output sound for directions for getting from one to the other while still in Maya’s raw form, so there is no need to look at the screen, i.e without playing the animation how do I output sound files? What format should I put the sound file into? How do I output the files after say 3 seconds of inactivity in the GUI after reading in the positions of the locators?
