earlyworm : hehe yeah thanks. I have one already too… but i find it pretty slack maya dont have one built in into the HUD menu.
azshall : ooo, resizable txt there is?! very cool, will try next time maya is open. Regarding my irratations I have solutions to all of these aspects myself… i spend some time on highend3d daily and have quite the custom maya pref setup 
The big thing is that i do really enjoy is the ability to do such things and that if everything was already there i perhaps would have never dug around in my mayas engine like i do. Dont get me wrong I love maya and its approach to a customisable setup -its fricken awesome!
Sure every program has its “issues” with implemetations. But I guess my bitching wasnt really about specifics(although mentioned) but how Alias dont really do the “new and improved” thing very well. Having been with Maya since 4.5 and still seeing things stay the same when they have issues is frustrating.
Lets see what Autodesk does… oh man please let them not kill the things that make maya so special.
mm… this on is probably a toughy for them (or maybe not) but for viewport i found a way to make your scene a bit better on the eye… If mapping through custom shaders etc for say a character, you can in the shading group node plug in the colour map into the surface material slot (i think thats what it is called) to have a “non green” representation of your model

aaah won’t bother going on but there are loads of things I’d like to see improved upon, but I just get the feeling maya 8 is gonna be more like 7.5 update. I know one thing about Maya 8…its gonna have a different splash screen that has AUTODESK on it, and maybe with a black background, ooh and a weird icon.
OH GODS OF MAYA, PLEASE GIVE US A NEW GUI… please put that fat-azz attribute editor on a diet, your taking up all the room AE!! and the point of a toolbox is? to help the newbies? aww, nothing in that box u cant make (or allready is) a hotkey. Selfish layers, learn to get into groups… as do you Mr. Refrence Editor… I guess alias never thourght people would be having a shyt load of refrences in 1 scene and would need to search thru them all to find 1 damn thing… Might as well intergrate melStudio into maya, script editor is some ancient crap. Please gods of maya, hook us up with a HUD editor or something, everything else got an aditor, why cant hud get 1 too. pimp out the marking menu editor too, would love to screw the hotbox up a bit more in maya rather than going into the core mels… the current maya history should be history… why not be able to edit history photoshop styles… i know you can delete 1 peice of history using the AE then selecting it then deleteing it, why the heck not make it a bit more user friendly and click on a peice of history and delete it? thats my 2 cents… mabye i can be bothered writing the whole dollar later… peace

Surface Sampler - bake Ambient Occlusion

maya already has that… its just not in the surface sampler. try looking in the texture baking menu…
I also vote for better UI - it should have 1, better usability 2, better look! (Personaly I would like something in compositing apps style - like Shake, Combustion, … I find these UI´s very clean and professional yet nice although I haven´t used either of them yet).
haha… i got one of those, an alpha channel button too… too bad they dont work at all.

I know of that feature and it’s not exactly what I want. I want to transfer the Ambient Occlusion from a high res model to a low res model. It should be in Surface Sampler.
Oh yeah, and Surface Sampler should also bake Specular. And I don’t know what I’m doing wrong but whenever I try to bake “Lit and Shaded Color Map” with lights that have shaddows (tried both Depth Map and Raytraced) I get a crashx0r. Has anyone had success with that one? (I’m working on a Mac G5)
for a second i thought you you meant tangent space occulsion?! 
nah i get ya… I used to used melody from nvidia to generate my maps and it used to output occlusion bake at the same time as a tangent space map… was very handy.
The spacebar still makes reset value to 0 in the attribute Editor. ( on Windows:blush: )
It can cause unwanted settings.
-Option for playback in Real-Time that plays subframes for a smoother playback. like Max, XSI and Motion Builder (MB can turn it on and off).
-Option to skip simple timeline changes from the Undo queue. If there is a change that happened on a specific time, it should still go to that time, but if you’ve been going back and forth repeatedly between a few frames and want to undo something you did way before that, it can be a big pain to have to undo all the little timeline changes.
-A simple and quick Attach and Detach poly surfaces tools that work like 3ds max’s. Combine and Extract/Seperate is simply bad. REAL bad. They leave nodes behind, screw up the axis and transforms, and Seperate seperates EVERY shell in the object instead of just the selected faces (when used with Extract).
-In graph editor, toggles to display animated keys and set driven keys.
-Better UI design that’s not only better visually, but improves maya’s alraedy great workflow.
-A Preserve UVs feature (maybe a move tool option, like Keep Spacing).
-A Delete History button on the Status Line
-A better script editor like Mel Studio.
-A weight editor like Motion Builder’s would be awesome
-Ability to rotate axis when in reposition axis mode (insert). I know technically you can’t rotate an axis, but I just want something that will rotate the object but keep the components in their current space, which is effectively rotating the axis.
-Improve Snap Move, Rotate and Scale. They are very fidgety at the moment. Also maybe add the ability to hold down Shift+Axis Handle to intiate it.
-A better ‘scale two axes on the manipulator’ feature, rather than the current Ctrl+Z Axis to scale in X and Y (for instance). Works fine in perspective but doesn’t work at all in ortho views.
-Connect tool (Can’t be that hard to write. MJpolytool’s works better than Max’s)
-Ability to numerically input transforms in multiple coordinate systems, including a Reference Object option. This should also be available for components.
-When changing the time format (say from PAL to NTSC), when selecting Keep Keys on Current Frames, it should also not effect the range of the time slider.
-Ability to select and deselect entire shell. I did bind the one found in the UVTE marking menu to a hotkey, works well but you can’t deselect with it.
-The Universal Manipulator functional on components would be cool
-Ability to disable skin so you can adjust bone positions would be cool but not all that necessary as you can already do that by deleting the skin and keeping the history.
