Maya 8 wishlist!

#141
  • 64 Bit
  • better render layers with fewer bug/issues (can’t believe so few people mention this)
  • all around more tweaks on the existing features

#142

how about fixing the attribute editor bugs and render settings bugs where randoms number will jump in the fields, its drving me nuts.

#143

For one, it’s used in MAX I hear, simply when you have like a number of edges close together, you click on the first and the last and the edges between are split linearly. Obviously I’m aware of the right click finishing.

#144

u can do that with new split edge ring tool

#145

thumbnail preview of a scene in the open file dialog, would help me so much with handeling these 400+ scenes

#146

render out a small thumbnail, like you would for an icon, with the same file name as the scene and keep it in the scene folder. You can automate that process too. Adjust your file viewer settings to thumbnail. I’d rather NOT have Maya spend system resources trying to render out a thumbnail preview of all my scenes every time i want to load one. It’s just not efficient.

#147

Yea that’s annoying… I get that alot when I am trying to set the up vectors for contraints and will type a 1 in somewhere and it turns up in the wrong field???

#148

enhanced preview of shaders and materials on hypergraph!

NO MORE SWATCHES!..just a real previews of the material or shader…
so when you download a metarial and put it on the shader library the preview show up on the go!
and no more click stuff copy paste drag or so to make custom materials previews !

My god, the annoying thing about these threads is that most of the issues mentionned are things that can be solved by certain tools already implemented and whenever someone posts a genuin improvement, everyone with 2 months of Maya experience knows the answer. I’ve been modeling in Maya since version 1, I’ve been teaching Maya for 4 years and I’ve used “the new split edge ring tool” for probably about 100.000 times now and I can tell you; no, you cannot use the new split edge ring tool for this, that’s a complete different way of splitting. Yet nevermind, with comments like this allover this thread, no one from Alias or Autodesk will ever take this thread seriously.

#150

Are you sure about that??

http://www.jozvex.com/temp/splitting.mov

Isn’t that exactly what you described?

#151

Allright, I’m not talking about edge loops, these are so easy to script I wouldnt mention it on my wishlist. Fact is I have a transfer UV world script but it sometimes messes everything up and takes quite long to calculate, so I kinda hope Alias puts this in their next Maya…

Now, whenever you’re doing cloth topology, you could start out with defining a square piece of garment, doing vertical and horizontal subs, getting the shape right. Afterwards you’d like to add buttons and folds, so you’ll have to create an entirely new topology, going in arcs from button to button, from pinch points to buttons and pinch to pinch, placing new topology ontop of an allready existing and sometimes dense topology, you’ll have to cut plenty of edges diagonally. It would be very convenient if you could Split Polygons jumping over corners, diagonal edges, triangles, whatever, without having to split every single edge… I don’t know (yet) how to create decent Maya plugins, especially if they’re tools, so it’s on my wishlist…

#152

Ohh ok, so more like a combination of the Split Edge Ring Tool (in that you select two edges) and the Cut Faces Tool (it cuts through whatever’s in its way).

#153

More like the Split Polygon Tool with Cut Faces Tool whenever edges are skipped actually, but yeah, about that.

#154

well i got through to about page 3 and thought id post based of what ive read.
Over my time of using maya i have come arcoss a ton of gripes. Some quite disgusting.
However - (although i would liek to see them) fancy new tools need to be put on hold for a mo

Maya has a old tired UI that really needs an overhaul. Some say UI fancyness is a waste and will slow down etc etc… but the time i waste looking through list of plain values without any real idication of submenus etc is painful. oh and a 400 x 800 window popup for 3 options - ha. Get real! shocking AE templates, bad tool names… the list goes on.

Also mplentations that are complete. eg. What gives with the new normal mapping in MR7… its a joke as it only passes scalar value to a bump node. WTF how does that work… Also there are many native scripts that really are quite tired and need an overhaul.

Although im worried about autodesk having control, in a way im also glad… I felt as alias tried to keep up in the way of development, they let the rest go. Kinda like a really “big” person buying on all the latest bikinis, and got that way from to much shopping mall food. It was always up to me after a rfresh install to spend the rest of my day getting my prefs/scripts/fixes ingtegrated to make maya the powerhorse it could be.

So regarding what id like changed regarding new features - I would prefer…

-Proper painting tools

-proper skinning methology and tools

-concise modelling tools

-tidied up gui (last attempt was a joke, WTF did putting polyUV menu in the modeling window do? maybe better but FFS do it properly, script editor is a joke… its like windows notepad… no worse! thats even better i can change display size there!

-better FBIK impementation… and animating interfaces, would actually want to have a play with this one day once its really ready!

-a flippin frame couter in HUD… geez im sure a alias could have whipped that up in a lunch break… probably to busy playing with viewport normal map inplementations … GAH!

oh im gonna stop there… i could go on. i have maya open and whereever i glance i remeber another gripe… its funny actually right now im look at a blank space of about …ooo 500 x 1100 of empty GUI with a bit of txt saying “make a selection to view attributes” hahaha

yep…

#155

Here see if this helps. It’ll toggle a frame counter on and off in the HUD.

I could file a decent retort for every irritation you have. I agree with them, but its not as bad as you make it sound

As for the script editor, … Yes, it sucks shit, however if you’re too blind to read… You can always hold teh CTRL key and scroll your Mouse Wheel  … You’ll notice the text magically grow like a shrinky dink! Roll the other way… Well, that should be obvious…

You can also script your own HUD’s … As Alias/Autodesk should have provided simple things like this … You can still make them if you want to do some searching on how…

In some respects, I wish they would just put it all in your face and give it all to you, but… I can say that I’m a little bit glad they did not. It has enabled me to have to dig deep into Maya and understand exactly how and why it works the way that it does (MEL scripting and all)… So, I use it to my advantage to learn and understand some of these simple things.

#157

How about a revamp of the artisan sculpt tool… to get it up to standard with mudbox / zbrush… so there is no need for a pipeline  and you have all your subdivisions still available :stuck_out_tongue:

#158

Have you tried the OpenMaya Toolbox? They’ve implemented some great modeling tools. Its mostly MJ PolyTools thats been optimized and cleaned up with added features… Just sucks they’ve not touched it in so long, was very promising to see a bunch of people actually dedicated to doing things that Alias should have outright done …

#159

Looks like Luxology has already taken notice to a lot of this guys work. If you look at Modo, it has a lot of the same visual … Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm…

OMT toolbox has a “connect” feature where you select the edges and even go around corners with the edge selection…and it will create an edge.

MJpoly Tools has this as well…but OMT has 95% of MJ features with some additional improvements.
