Maya 8 wishlist!

What’s faster for selection masks than marking menus (right-click on the surface and drag)? Sorry, I don’t know Silo…

Oh, maybe:

F8: Object mode
F9: Vertices
F10: Edges
F11: Faces

?

Don’t you ever use the Hotkey editor ? (Maya 7 link)

Btw on nGons face center is sometimes hidden underneath the surface… Having nGons is not much recommended as soon as you leave illustration, though.

Some sort of surface smoothing, or geometry average that maintains the volume of the object. I know there’s average vertacies and the paint sculpt tool which has a smoothing brush, but they all tend to colapse the object while smoothing it. I’d love a tool that averaged out the geometry to make everything nice and uniform, while not killing the shape I’ve sculpted.
I know I could always duplicate the object, smooth it, and then use that as a surface guide to stick too, but so much extra work…

#243

Adding a 16 Bits Support for the IMPORT Texture in the Attribute map of the Sculpt Geometry Tool !!

lol that what is the most important for me yesterday ^^

And other good tools like in Modo, like the selection system for all component, and a Fall Off tool.

#244

With silo you have A S D for switching  that is really fast… and Z for extract face, edge and such… ALT + e = select edge loop… shift + x is split edge loop. just hotkeys that are really fast to use  things like the F keys are a bit harder to use… as far as i know there is no way to set hotkeys for switching between faces / edges / vertices.

#245

all you request is easily doable with the hotkey editor… and to see what MEL commands maya invokes when you press the F8,9,10, etc keys either go to the Hotkey editor and search for those or enable Echo all commands into the script editor and watch into it after you press those keys.

btw don’t know if you’re aware of, but to select an edge loop, select the edge then hold ctrl and fastly drag with the RMB to the far-right-down direction (and for edge ring, drag the far-left-down direction). It takes 0.2 seconds to do that… learn the true power of Marking Menus and you’ll never go back to hotkeys for this kind of purposes

You mean to select the select edge loop tool? Cause that one pretty much blows i think :frowning:

No, that marking menu just does a selection. You can go into the tool in one of those menus though if you want to.

#248

I’m trying that as soon as I get home. Thanks!

#249

Let me know if you have more luck as i don’t seem to get this working :stuck_out_tongue: I only get the pie menu with the edge loop selection tool

#250

If you select an edge and then hold Control-RMB you get ring/loop selection menus in the lower left and lower right directions. In those sub-menus there are the selection tools as well as some commands…like select, select and delete, select and split. If you just continue in the direction of the sub-menu you get the select commands.

If that isn’t what you get then I’m not sure what is wrong…

#251

Sorry but the only sub menu is called edge loop utilities… there is not a submenu with commands. In the utillities you can select the edge loop tool but its not really all that fast as you still have to double click and cant even do it on a face

Also something like vertice tweak is really must have i think

#252

In the “Edge Loop Utilities” there isn’t one called “To Edge Loop”?

#253

Yup and then its select all the edges lol

#254

No, Mech7, just get a 3 button mouse you’re missing that that’s all. No need to advertise on that its operating on Maya since…wer…a while. The third button IS that tweak thingy, works for geometries AND attributes as well as modifiers…

Hem.

#255

I did get it working. My God, the amount of power that I don’t know about in this app. Please don’t increase the price on me next week, Autodesk! (Unless you give me fluids in Maya complete!)

To get this working, I selected an edge. If you hold ctrl and right click, extra options appear- at about 5 o’clock there is an option called “edge loop utilities”, which opens futher menus like to “to edge loop” and “to edge loop, then delete”, etc.

Now- to get there quicker- if you can memorize all this stuff, you select an edge, hold ctrl, and QUICKLY right-click and drag down further and faster into the five o’clock position. I had more luck by dragging my mouse faster and a greater distance than I normally do in marking menus.

This takes you directly into “edge loop utilities” and the options it would normally require two gestures to get to.

goleafsgo - great tip!

#256

There isn’t even a highlight ? When i have the move tool and and go near to a vertice a cant tweak it without selecting it first.

#257

add this to a shelf or a marking menu/hotkey or whatever to toggle clickDrag (aka you dont have to select things to move/scale/rotate/manipulate them):

selectPref -clickDrag (!selectPref -q -clickDrag)

Do you get the impression that Maya 8 will be out soon?

Pixar will also reveal RenderMan for Maya 2.0, the latest version of Pixar’s acclaimed Maya rendering plug-in bringing RenderMan’s peerless feature film quality to all Maya artists. Version 2.0 incorporates multiple enhancements including multi-threading, ray-tracing optimizations, and Maya 8 compatibility. In addition, from the first day of the SIGGRAPH 2006 tradeshow, all new purchasers of the current RenderMan for Maya 1.2 will be offered a free upgrade to version 2.0 when it is released later in 2006.

How can it be compatible when there is no software? Or is there?

#259

hehe, ofcourse, Maya 8 will come 3 days from now on, at Sigg

renderman 2.0 ??! bleah! :))
mentalray 3.5 / vray for maya rule !! :scream::scream:

Where did you see the quote about Renderman for Maya 2.0?
